PFN picked up wrong ticket

I just got a PFN.

I was traveling to Kings Cross from Welwyn Garden City.

I bought a ticket at the machine and picked it up not realizing id picked up a ticket left by the customer before me.

The ticket inspector fined me despite me clearly showing evidence I had paid for a ticket. I showed him the clearly timed and dated bank transaction on my mobile app.

What do you think the chances of an appeal are???

Where was the ticket you picked up headed for or was it just a receipt or something?

Just to be clear, will the ticket definitely show up as collected (i.e. did you successfully get to the stage where it prints it out) ?

Pretty slim prospects of an appeal on the basis that you picked up the wrong ticket and thus showed the inspector the wrong ticket - but having said that there is no harm in trying an appeal - you have nothing to lose.
Don't miss the appeal or prompt payment discount deadlines however (payment deadline is paused whilst appeals are considered)

The problem they have is that it would be possible to give someone else the ticket you bought and you travel on the bank transaction. A Penalty Fare is the least worst sanction they could have given you for what happened, so you may need to chalk this up to experience.

But if, as asked, you upload a copy of it Penalty Fare experts here might find a stronger grounds for appeal to advise you to use, over and above the grounds you were thinking of.

Yes, it's highly unfortunate but you couldn't show a valid ticket when asked to do so, it's a slam dunk penalty fare. There may be some technical reason why it's invalid so post it up and let the experts have a look. You've nothing to lose by appealing but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up.
