For my weeks holiday, I decided to spend some time up in the North West and based myself in Wigan for 6 nights.
My aim was to complete all my untraveled lines in the area, pacers
and finish off the Merseyrail lines.
North West Rover 4 in 8 days £52.50 (With Senior rail card)
MerseyRail saveaway all zones £5.40 (A real bargain for a whole days travel) but no rail card discounts.
I had to buy some extra tickets to do some lines outside of the rovers area.
Day 1 - Sunday September 1st. Traveled from Hemel Hempstead to Wigan and then got a return(using the 3 mile rule) to Hall Road and went via Southport and back via Liverpool Central.
Day 2
Wigan Wallgate, Kirkby, Hunts Cross, West Kirby, Chester, Hooton, Ellesmere Port for the 18.23 direct train to Warrington. (Only 2 a day) Wigan
Day 3
Wigan Wallgate to Manchester Vic via Daisy Hill, Huddersfield for the Penistone line to Barnsley. Halifax, Burnley Manchester Road, Burnley Central, Colne, Preston, Wigan.
Day 4
Wigan Blackpool North, Preston, Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham Port (1 train a day), Preston, Blackpool South, Wigan, Southport, Wigan,
Day 5
Wigan North Western, Carlisle, around the Cumbrian coast to Barrow in Furness. Preston, Ormskirk, Liverpool, Kirkby, Wigan
Day 6
Wigan North Western, Manchester Vic via Westhoughten, Hebden Bridge, Tormorden, Blackburn, Manchester Picc, Rose Hill Marple, Manchester Picc (the dreaded platforms 13 & 14) Poulton le Fylde, Wigan.
Miles accumulated 1,365.
I don't really do numbers but rode on 142's, 144's, 150's, 156's, 158's, 507's, 508's and 195. With Northern, you never what's going to turn up.
I spoke with a Northern guard at Barrow about the 195's and software issues with them. In the end the 195 had a broken radio, so it was a 2 car 158 to Manchester airport. He liked the pacer, not much to go wrong with them and he said they were reliable and as a guard, he could see most of the train.
Thoughts.
Northern really need to clean the windows for the scenic line around the Cumbrian coast.
Trans Peninne Excuse. I had to stand between Manchester and Huddersfield and it was the middle of the day.
For those that do do numbers, unusual for me, pacers ridden.

142024, 142057, 142032, 144008, 144018, 144027, 142037, 142051, 142047, 142056, 142045.
