I was a Grade 5 Signaller for over 11 years, and took voluntary redundancy, but being bored I decided to try and get back on.

Since I was rejected for Petersfield last August ( "its a starter box, you won't be suitable to move on to Basingstoke or Salisbury, the other 2 will have longer careers than you."), one of the starter recruits is moving on to guess where! Someone confirm where. CONFIRMS that Wessex do indeed use Petersfield as a beginners box.

Ex Signallers or ANYONE old enough to be up against the people who will have longer careers than you BEWARE. Petersfield is indeed reserved for the beginner boys, and I'm sure they do a good job there too! Good luck to you.

There is one long serving Signaller resident, who trains the new to the railway starters. Of course Petersfield can't have 4 relatively inexperienced Signallers at one time.

Come on Wessex, admit it, you don't want anyone over a certain age to block your promotion ladders first rung. Now explain, substantially, how an 11 year grade 5, with a unblemished record didn't get a grade 3, compared to someone with no signalling experience, unless the above is true.

This is difficult to comprehend, but I think it might just be a bit of a rant.

The world of the signaller is different now to the world you knew before you took voluntary redundancy.
Sorry to say it, but, get used to it.

It is notoriously hard to get back into NR and especially into the signalling grades once you've left. Surely that's well known by every experienced member of staff? It doesn't help if you've burnt your bridges which, judging from the tone of this rant, there's every possibility you may well have done. You are an external applicant now, the same as everyone else and you'll need to score highly on the assessments and have a very good interview to stand a chance of getting a job. "Fed up with the railway so left, got bored and fancied coming back" won't cut it.

I work in a box that isn't Petersfield; but is nearby (and of similar grade).
The notion that you are being rejected because of age and railway experience is unfortunately a false one; locally ages 20-60 have been hired in the past two years alone; some of the elder cohort with considerable railway experience. There is also at least one signaller in every "small" box in Wessex that intends to stay there until they retire.
What signallerscot says is true; scoring highly on the assessments and having a very good interview is essential. Block school is also a lot more challenging these days (there were several "returnees" there at the same time as me; and this was their opinion). Part of the reason the interview is like it is is that verbal communiucation is much more highly scrutinised now than even 5 years ago; because we've had so many irregularities/injuries/even deaths because of it. It's difficult to analyse that in the aptitude tests; so being assertive; actively listening and conveying an argument and a discussion clearly and concisely are all key skills in my opinion.
However; that isn't to say you can't do them. Becoming a signaller has never been easy; and if you did it once with the right training and practice you can probably do it again.
If I can be of any help at all; please feel free to PM

All 3 small boxes on the Direct line have their fair share of graft and troubles, Sheet LC constantly plays up for PF, haslemere have the issue of trying to regulate when things go wrong, and Farncombe, well it's just Farncombe! I actually think they do a good job, it's Havant ASC that wind me up, but I know the signaller is only working how he has to...recently I was held at Cosham Jnc for a Southern service that hadn't even left Emsworth at the time....

Of course its a rant. I as interviewed for another Grade 5 just before, but quiet rightly a 25 year ex Signaller got it. Not an interview as such for Petersfield, just an explanation "its a starter box..."
Answer to Tom Boyd - YES, who do you think said this to me.

I've just been shown this. We think ex signaller is right. Scottish & Godfrey sound like the management or stoolies. The bloke must have passed the Assessments to get an interview. Apologise for being condescending. About irregularities etc, are you saying the new intake cause less than we do. Its at best 50/50.
So how is it that being good for a 40 minute interview beats 11 years 'unblemished' service at 2 grades higher than Petersfield?
