Peterborough visit...

I'm thinking about visiting Peterborough station at some point in July, is it busy and would people recommend or not recommend a visit?

Busy as in busy with passenger workings or busy with freight? IIRC Freightliner have a stabling point there and there is some Plasmor freight sidings nearby.

Last time i was there (just a change over) the GC and Hull Trains were non stop at 100mph so i dont think youll get many numbers.

Not sure if either stop there, i didnt see any.


Its busy enough though!

In an hour i think i saw 2 HT non stop, 1 GC non stop, 4-6 East Coast services, 2 Midlands and 4 FCC's.

Only 1 66 though.

There's a bitr of freight at peterborough i've seen 92's through there. There's an EWS (DB) depot and GBRF depot close to the station. As for NXEA they have a service to peterborough once every 2 hours so possibly Ely or Cambridge is best for them a few shots i grabbed can be seen here http://www.seandeacon.fotopic.net/c1633143.html

As a resident of Peterborough, I can tell you quite confidently that there are no Plasmor sidings there, nearest ones are at Biggleswade!

As to what passenger services comes though

Stopping:

First Capital Connect
East Midland Trains
Arriva Cross Country
East Coast
National Express East Anglia

Non Stopping:

Hull Trains
Grand Central
East Coast


As to what freight services comes though

DBS
GB Railfreight
Freightliner
DRS/Serco

Stabling wise, there's the Nene Sidings which stable FCC stock but is also used at times to stable other stock during disruption/engineering works ie Grand Central. There's also the Diesel Maintenance Depot just north of the station which is managed by DBS and also GB Railfreight have their own Maintenance Depot just further north along the line. Freightliner doesn't have a depot as such in Peterborough but they do have a office on the station.

The Plasmor trains you speak of actually stop over in the station area for crew changes as do many other freight trains.

At about 3pm, it's not usual *Tom Jones! to have the Plasmor train as well as a Freightliner Intermodal stabled on the though freight lines which is beside Platform 5.

i would recommend it, i been to Peterborough myself on the 26th of May 2010, and it's an good place, if you got onto Platform 3 there head south down Platform 3, there's an hog pen like part at the south end of three which is an good spot, there is loads of trains passing, National Express 170's, East Midland Traiins 158's, East Coast 91 & 43, got lucky when i went on May 26th and got an FCC Class 321, Grand Central do speed past on the fast lines

I would recommend Peterorough - I go there as it is one my "regular" spots.

If you go to my fotopic website, and search on Peterborough, you will see a selection of what turns up.

Agree though, for NXEA you would be better to go to Ely, Cambridge or Ipswich, depending on which type of unit you were after.
