Dear all,

new trip, new problem...

I have to go from Peterborough to Coventry on November 9th and have to arrive at 12:00 at latest. The first train arrives at 14:11 and going from Peterborough to Leicester by bus and then from Leicester to Coventry by train is slightly too late, too.

Any hints?

Travel via London.

I'm out and about at the moment so can't check if PBO-COV is valid via London but there should be some splitting opportunities with Great Northern super off peak tickets and London Midland tickets.

You could get there as early as 1003, 1023 or 1123 via London, but the rail industry doesn't want your custom for this journey so it's best to use another mode of transport.

According to the Train Companies, passengers either wish to take a direct train or the shortest route. They are in denial that passengers actually want the quickest route or appropriate journey times to suit their requirements, and therefore do not always cater for such requirements.

If you do go via London, then you'll need to "split". Manually. This will cost £17.90 for Peterborough-London (book on the East Coast website for the best deal) and £20 (or £23 first class) from London to Coventry. I'd walk from KGX to EUS; it should take 15 mins max, but you need to allow at least 35 for it to be a valid connection.

Trainsplit.com will be able to work out such splits for you automatically in future, but not at present. Some people in the rail industry appear to be against split ticketing websites, despite the fact that such websites might actually encourage people to travel by rail for such a journey where the conventional booking engines will just say it can't be done.

Is there any other industry that so actively puts off potential customers? (rhetorical question! Of course there isn't!)

Out of interest, what makes this "the best deal"? I know a few TOCs have cashback deals and the like, but is there anything special here, given that it's not an East Coast ticket?

If Talent doesn't fancy the walk, booking an advance ticket from Kings Cross to Coventry adds an extra £1 to the standard price, £1.50 first class (at current prices). It would be fine to catch the tube from Finsbury Park or Kings Cross St. Pancras for this journey, as the ticket to London covers the section between the two.

The East Coast website provides up to 10% off their Advance Singles, and half-price Super Off Peak Singles from most EC-served stations to/from London Terminals.

It's only marginally more for the Any Permitted Super Off Peak Single (£21.95) compared to the cheapest available ticket (£17.90 for FCC Only).

Using any other site, yes the £17.90 ticket will still be available, but other fares will cost more, so you won't get a comparison of the best possible fares.

In this case I personally would pay slightly more for the Any Permitted ticket.

Thanks. The £17.90 ticket is valid on every train which meets Talent's stated requirements, so paying for an any permitted ticket would be money for nothing, even if they aren't a huge amount more.

I am wondering if Talent intends to return to Peterborough by train, though, as a £20 advance ticket isn't that attractive when you need a ticket the other way.

All,

due to some "adverse conditions" I didn't go from Peterborough to Coventry. I stayed the night in Luton and went to Peterborough by train (2x advance for £17 each) and to Coventry by NX (£15 return).
