Peterborough to Buxton Return

I've been asked to find out the best possible way to travel at any time on a Saturday between Peterborough and Buxton but also what the best route to take as well.

This includes both split-able tickets and though tickets, I can't give any times other then they're willing to travel at any time.

Any help would be appreciated,

Whichever route or ticket combination you choose it will involve travelling to Stockport or Manchester first before travelling back towards Buxton.
Without splitting you are thinking of a very high fare of £71.50 for a return.

I know that this is a rail forum but I would suggest getting the train to Matlock (one change at Nottingham from Peterborough) and then a bus from Matlock to Buxton.
Peterborough to Matlock is only £26.60 return.
There is regular bus service from Matlock to Buxton (at least hourly I think) and this will only cost you a few pounds.

Single or return?

Off Peak Return is £71.50, but for a day return or singles splitting will definitely be cheaper (NRE gives a cheaper split fare if you don't select 'show slower trains').

The journey does however take over 4 hours though by train. I would think a better route would be Peterborough-Sheffield (£45.20 SVR, I'm sure there are cheaper splits though) or PBO-Derby (£22.60 SVR), both around 1h30. Then a bus from either of these.

From Derby, there is a Transpeak coach service to Manchester, calling at Buxton - around 1h40 hours Derby to Buxton hourly, and probably around £10 single.

From Sheffield, you can get the 65 to Buxton - takes about the same time as from Derby since it's a local service rather than "express".

edit: ashworth beat me! Matlock may be a better bet - it's the same bus as from Derby, but saves the walk from Derby station to the bus station - and lets face it, anything that avoids Derby has to be a good thing The bus also goes from Nottingham which would also be an option - bus station is near train station IIRC.

I did this the other week! Its always quicker going via Doncaster or Retford to get to Sheffield than Leicester/Nuneaton or the EMT to Liverpool, but it still took an age.
As I'm staff I did the journey wholly by rail but if I wasn't I'd go via Matlock and bus it.
One thing that surprised me is that Buxton is quite close to Macclesfield so busing it from there is an option too.

Bowers bus 58 hourly via lovely scenic route over Cat & Fiddle. Didn't this used to be available as a rail-bus add-on fare - Buxton Bus via Macclesfield ?

Macclesfield might be a nice scenic idea but at £67 for a return, without looking at splitting, it could end up even more expensive than going all the way by train via Stockport. Also getting to Macclesfield will take quite some time from Peterborough which ever route is taken.

Wayfarers are good. Valid Derby-Sheffield-New Mills / New Mills-Buxton, or Derby-Matlock then the bus Matlock-Buxton.

I've never walked the connection at New Mills, though I've cycled it at least two or three times, and providing you aren't too slow walking, it should be OK to make the connection.

Then Derbyshire Wayfarer for £8.90

Total £20.50 return or £14.70 one way

It's only 1300 meters between the two stations at New Mills.

There is also a 'Nottingham Derbyshire Wayfarer' that is only available from Nottingham station (I believe). It allows travel from Nottingham railway station and is a few quid more than the standard Derbyshire Wayfarer but could cut your price down further.

Derbyshire Wayfarer is even better value if there's more than one of you. The standard £8.90 ticket covers one adult and one child travelling together, and the group ticket at £15.10 covers two adults and up to three children. A group wayfarer is about the same price as one adult and one railcard holder off-peak day return between Derby and Sheffield.

The wayfarer including train travel from Nottingham is £14.10, so you're paying £5.20 for the extension. If you intend to travel from Nottingham to Derby on a train that stops at Long Eaton then it's cheaper to buy a normal wayfarer and an off-peak day return from Nottingham to Long Eaton at £3.70, but if your train does not stop at Long Eaton or you're heading into Derbyshire via Langley Mill (i.e. on a Nottingham to Chesterfield train) then the combined Nottingham wayfarer is cheaper than buying a separate ticket for Nottingham to Derby (£5.90 off-peak day return) or Nottingham to Langley Mill (£6 anytime day return, there doesn't appear to be an off-peak one).

(There's an exception to every rule, of course - the 09:18 train from Nottingham to Matlock stops at Long Eaton and is valid on the extended wayfarer but not on the £3.70 ticket because wayfarers are valid from 09:00 whereas that CDR is only valid from 09:30...)

It's even quicker if you come out of New Mills Central (from Manchester bound platform), cross the road and go through the gap in the wall. This takes you into the Torrs. At the bottom of the slope take a right across the river over an old bridge then climb up the steps by the old disused cotton mill. Pass the playing field on your right and you'll end up on Wirksmoor Road. Carry on straight up til you reach New Mills Newtown!
