I think there's one at South Ruislip, but I'm not sure if it works.

I have never seen it switched on, even when the ticket office at South Ruislip is closed - rather sensible really, as it is inside the ticket barriers

Colwall (between Worcester and Hereford) has one which is on all the time (no booking office - it's a small village station). There's also one at Ledbury which is switched off when the (independent) booking office is open.

Duddesdon had one working the last time I was there, was about a year ago now though!

On the flip side, Haddenham & Thame Parkway had it's PERTIS removed a few months before the TVMs were broken into. The replacement TVM is card only and inside the ticket office, so out of hours there is no way to bur or collect tickets.... I wonder how many other candidate stations there are that now would be candidate for a PERTIS machine?

Brixton in London has one, and no TVM.

Last time I was there (a while back now) The Hawthorns station had one.

It looks different to me. Compare the pictures. The one on ebay has less markings on the paint, a different plate in the bottom left corner, more black border around the main body of the text and appears to have a white coin reject button whereas the stolen one appears to have a metal reject coin button.

That certainly looks like the one. Only went a few stops down the line in the end, then (it's in Letchworth Garden City according to the eBay auction). I assume that one wasn't stolen or anything else dodgy?

When I used to travel regularly through Monks Risborough and Little Kimble prior to 2005 one of the lights on the Pertis at one or possibly both stations said "When lit buy on train" as opposed to the usual "When lit not in use" and "When lit buy at ticket office."

Cosford, Oakengates and Albrighton all have PERTIS machines, however, in my experience, they rarely work.

Also on that line, Gaurds sometimes rather you didn't buy a Permit to Travel (PTT), but I wouldn't risk it.

Saw a discarded PTT on the bridge between the train station and bus station in Wolves this afternoon, someone clearly hadn't bothered to pay the rest of the fare on arrival.

It's possible that they put the exact change to the exact value of their ticket in the PTT machine (though unlikely)!

i've met guards who say there prefer people to put 'sensible' amounts in the PTT I.e. 10 p , 1gbp or the 'change' part of your fare ( i.e. if the far was 3.30 put 30 p in)

they dislike people who do random amounts or 5 p

Does the guard have to calculate the difference manually, or does Avantix do this?

I don't think there is anything in the NRCoC or Penalty Fare rules which says passengers must use all available coins up the value of the fare.

As I've more than one guard tell me that as the machines are so unreliable I should only put in a nominal amount, I generally use whatever single coin comes to hand first.

How are you supposed to pay if you don't know the fare? I could have sworn there was an exception for people who don't know the fare, thus making it unenforceable even if there is such a rule that you have to get as close as you can with exact change.

The instructions say you are to put in as many coins as possible up to the value of your fare. However, staff instructions are many and variable, including "only put in 5p/10p/one coin" and the above-mentioned "put in the bit after the decimal point" (presumably to reduce the amount of change the guard has to mess around with).

Historically, the price of common fares in the local area was displayed on or near PERTIS machines, but I don't know if this is the case nowadays.
