Perth overnight

I've just returned home via Perth and was amazed by the number of 158 and 170 units being stabled there - I counted 9 in all, and saw another two heading across the bridge into the station from Dundee. Add on the final arrival from Glasgow and that's 12/13 units.

I was wondering what's so special about Perth that it seems to be turned into a depot overnight?

I think it may be because it virtually is a depot!

Can't quote platform numbers but to the North end of the main trainshed, there is a carriage sidings which has a number of roads as well as a train wash over the far side, parallel to the platform (8 or or 9 or something like that?)

I think coupled to the fact, some platforms see little use on a day to day basis (has to be said, it is now far oversized for what it needs to be) it makes an ideal place.

That said, I absolutely loved the station when I visited last year (me and a friend spent a couple of days based in Perth so made a few uses of the station) and similar to what you saw, there were trains literally dotted all over the place on the first day we arrived. I took a few pictures but they aren't on this PC but I think we counted about 7 or 8 units total with a couple, at least, parked up and shut down in one of the through platforms under the main trainshed (though not actually coupled)

Stock is also stabled at Stirling overnight - there are power and water supplies on some of the bay platforms.

Platforms 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 seem to be the most used. The washer road is adjacent to Platform 7

Platform 3 was chock-a-block, with 2x170 and 1x158.

Platform 7 had 2x170 (what I'd just got off) and (from memory) there was another 170 up in the distance, on the washer road, Platform 6 had 2x158 and platform 4 had a 170.

What looked like a 158+170 then came over the bridge from Dundee into platform 1 or 2. Presumably platforms 5 and 2 or 1 were being kept clear for the subsequent arrivals from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

I was wondering what's so special about Perth that it seems to be turned into a depot overnight?

For the start off services in the morning mate. Also a lot of trains start at Perth in the morning as empties to run to places like Markinch and Glenrothes to start as morning commuter trains. IIRC there are roughly 15-18 sets of DMU coaches stabled at Perth overnight.
