Permitted routes Glasgow to Edinburgh

Hello,

Travelling from Glasgow to Edinburgh next week and planning to get an open ticket - am I right in saying that the train is valid by all four main routes between the two cities, or are there restrictions?

For instance, could I go to Holytown for some spotting then on to Wishaw and take the Carstairs line to Edinburgh?
