Permitted route: Odd service patterns

A particular permitted route includes a series of train services and changes. However, one particular line en route has no Sunday service, therefore no itineraries via this route can generate on a Sunday.

Can an Anytime Day Single still be used along the remainder of that same route on a Sunday?

If you could please state the journey being made it would be very helpful in being able to advise.

However to answer your question, yes, an Anytime Day Single (and possibly other walk-up tickets depending on the journey) can be used for the remainder of the route on which services operate on a Sunday.

I think the answer is that it isn't permitted, but you should be able to get away with it.

The Conditions of Travel state that:

If no specific route or Train Company is shown, then (subject to any time restrictions for the type of fare you have purchased) it will be valid on:

13.1.1 any direct train service between the station(s) shown on your Ticket; or

13.1.2 as shown on the itinerary presented by the journey planner on www.nationalrail.co.uk or from a Licensed Retailer in connection with the purchase of a Ticket and/or including the relevant restrictions applying to that Ticket.

If you are using a series of train services you probably aren't using a direct service between the stations on your ticket. If no itineraries can generate for a Sunday (even for a different type of ticket), you can't travel as shown on one.

That said, the staff you meet won't normally check a journey planner to find out whether or not a ticket is valid. If your proposed route is accepted without question on another day, it almost certainly will be on a Sunday.
