I have been researching permitted routes via Leamington Spa and London Marylebone and have the following question:

On a ticket "via any permitted route" can I start at Leamington Spa, take a train to Oxford, get off the train and take a train from Oxford to London Marylebone? The direct route from Leamington Spa to London Marylebone does not stop at Oxford.

Any help would be greatly received.

Many thanks.

I can't answer your question directly, but you could try putting the journey with Via Oxford into the forum ticket site and see what pops out.

Unless there's a direct train (entirely possible at the moment with the flooding between Bicester North and Aynho the past couple of days), Marylebone - Oxford - Leamington isn't a permitted route.

Options are:
  • Euston - Coventry (optionally via Northampton) - Leamington Spa
  • Marylebone - Leamington Spa direct
  • Paddington - Reading - Leamington Spa

That doesn't seem correct. This search gives me a super off-peak single for LMS-OXF-MYB.

Marylebone - Leamington Spa direct is 88.75 miles according to the eNRT. Marylebone - Oxford is 66.5 miles and Oxford - Leamington Spa is 40.75 miles, for a total of 107.25 miles, so it's not within 3 miles of the shortest route.

London Group and Leamington Spa are both routeing points so there's no need to do a fares check.

Map combinations are EN+SM, GC and EG+RB. None of those show the route between Marylebone and Oxford and then on to Leamington Spa.

There doesn't appear to be a relevant easement, so I'm at a loss to explain how the forum site has concluded that's a permitted route.

Doing a search on the National Rail site gives the expected warning that it's not a permitted route and may require multiple tickets. (I specified the via point as Bicester Village because specifying Oxford resulted in a route via Paddington.)

Thank you very much for this explanation. Really interesting seeing how they calculate permitted routes.

Really appreciate the reply.
