Please could someone advise me on my journey? I have a standard off peak day return ticket from Ilkley to Wakefield Stations. The route states "any permitted" and validity says "see restrictions" (nothing listed on my ticket).
I am travelling off peak on a weekday, and have no other discount entitlements.
I would like to travel Ilkley - Castleford, get off the train for a while, then continue my journey Castleford to Wakefield. Later I would return Wakefield to Leeds then Ilkley.
Am I allowed to break my journey at Castleford - and can it be on my outward or return?
If I fancied going on to Glasshoughton would this be permissable using this ticket - again, on the way out or return, and do I need to / can I continue to Pontefract Monkhill to do this? Are there any restrictions over where I can leave the train during my journey?
Hope you can help - I've tried the ATOC maps, but I'm still confused.

All the fares available from Ilkley to Wakefield Stations allow break of journey in both directions, so no issues there.

As to the question of permitted routes, Ilkley to Wakefield via Leeds and Castleford is fine; permitted on map WY. Via Glasshoughton is not OK if you would be doubling back through Castleford.

Via Glasshoughton, Pontefract and thence direct to Wakefield via Featherstone and Streethouse is an interesting one. I think it is OK, despite the line not being shown explicitly on map WY, because you would not be passing through any other routeing points between Pontefract and Wakefield. Thus the red line shown between Pontefract and Wakefield effectively covers both possible routes. There is a precedent to this whereby some maps only show one red line between Leeds and York, but the routes via Garforth and Harrogate are both allowed.

I don't agree. Glasshoughton and Castleford are both members of Pontefract Group for routeing purposes - see the list of Group Stations. Doubling back between any of the five stations in the Group is specifically allowed by the GROUP STATIONS paragraph on page 6 of the Routeing Guide Instructions.

I agree. It is relatively common for there to be more than one route between adjacent Routeing Points where the Guide shows only one line on the maps. In these circumstances, the only interpretation which makes sense is that on a mapped route travel is allowed by any route between adjacent Routeing Points which does not pass through any other Routeing Point and does not pass through any station more than once between the Routeing Points.

In summary, yes, you may break your journey at any intermediate station on either or both outward or return legs of the journey. Map WY shows that travel via Pontefract Group is allowed, so you may go via Castleford and Glasshoughton because both are members of Pontefract Group. Leaving Glasshougton, you may choose to continue to Wakefield via Pontefract, or to double back via Castleford making use of the Group Stations rule. "Doubling back" is defined on page 2 of the Guide as "passing through the same station twice on a single journey".

John is right of course; I had missed that Glasshoughton and Castleford are in Pontefract routeing group.

It's not likely to be needed, but if you feel more confident carrying full documentation then print:
