Permanent way gangs

Not everyone can reach the holy grail of becoming a train driver.
For the rest of us and those looking at permant way gangs in particular, is the
work really permanent as the title suggests, or just short term contracts.

What is the pay like? what could it lead to if anything?

The 'permanent way' is the infrastructure the trains run on (tracks etc), this title has nothing to do with the status of the job.

Jobs can vary between short term and permanent contracts just the way any other job can, you'll have to check the specifications of each individual job to discover such information.
