What governs when a period return (eg Anytime Return / Off peak return) is available on a given journey?

Generally distance: return tickets were restricted to same-day around London in the mid-60s, and that has been extended to many other areas. But there is no set cut-off point, and any blanket SE rule no longer applies either (IIRC back around 1980 you couldn't get an Ordinary Return from London to most parts of the Southern...).

It always used to be that there were only day returns within 50 miles .All change in January as well for some trial flows.
