I am sorry to be the messenger of bad news but all the Infrastructure Contractors are making long term staff redundant because of the lack of work.

Network Rail appear to have embarked on an an exercise to bring everything back in house but will not have the staff to carry out the work so we think that this will be passed out to the various Labour suppliers who now undertake maintenance for Network Rail.

On top of this it looks increasingly likely that NR will be sacking and then re-employing a reduced number fo maintenance staff at much reduced wages and on worse conditions shortly.

In short it is the worst possible time to be looking for work, as the latest word on the street is that one BIG Imfrastructure contractor is likely to leave the Industry by the beginning of next year because of the lack of work and the impossibility of competing against cheap labour suppliers who provide untrained, poorly equipped, and poorly motivated self employed labourers.

Hence, the degree course I'm doing is a safer bet - work placement for 5 months each year, for 2 years. There’s not necessarily a job at the end of the course, but it's likely, depending on the contacts you make on placement. The Network Rail-sponsored students on my course were warned not to assume a job will be available; the two of us from Volker Rail haven't been told that so...I'll take that as a good thing for now! :)
