What was the purpose of the connecting door was it just for staff, the distance between two sets when coupled up looks quite a gap?

Staff and emergency exit in tunnels, same as the production units.

The SUB's and VEP's were/are my fav units having ridden on both types day in, day out back in my early career days.

PS: in one of the signal boxes I worked in we had several seat cushions from either SUB or EPB laid on the floor behind the frame, which came in handy for anyone doubling back on shifts, ie: off late turn and directly in to Early turn, off night's in to late's etc, when going home, if one lived quite distant, wasn't worth the effort.
