Next to our house is a lay-by and for the past month a cream coloured Triumph Stag has been abandoned by its owner right next to where I reverse the van into its parking place making things extremely awkward for me and the neighbours.
Mrs C saw him when he first parked up and he told her that he’d broken down and that he was going to pick it up the next day.
A month later I phoned the council about it and they reported back to me that it was in hand and that the vehicle had no tax or mot, so they turned up and stuck a notice on it.
The owner (who is a bounder and a cad I believe but I’ll come to that in a moment), then turned up to put a new notice on it saying he was going to pick it up, which he eventually did yesterday.

As a little leaving present though he decided to empty all of the rubbish out of the car and onto the lay-by. These include various receipts, drinks cartons, cigarettes packets, both the notices that were on the car and one pair of ladies pants (tartan).
Does anyone think it worth contacting the council and complaining about this or should I just get out there with a bin bag and a pair of tweezers and just forget all about it?

Quite surprised by this. Not the abandonment per se (sign of the times) but because I thought Triumph Stags were worth a reasonable amount these days.

Does anyone think it worth contacting the council and complaining about this or should I just get out there with a bin bag and a pair of tweezers and just forget all about it?

I’d call the council and get them to be the ones turning out with bin bags and tweezers. You’re paying for it via your council tax, after all!

It’s fairly obvious that the notices were his but I don’t know if anyone’d have the time to DNA test the knickers these days...

It's just possible, but unlikely, that his dna wasn't present on those

I'd take a picture and send it to.the council. No doubt they'll have already traced him as the registered keeper, so a littering fine could be added.

Shame it's not finders keepers with abandoned cars, though. I'd have had it towed into my driveway by now.

You wouldn’t just leave it dumped in a lay-by for weeks on end would you? As you say it’s probably worth a few bob (once you’d put yet another new head gasket in it and cleared the rubbish out).

The trouble is my driveway is about two metres from where he’s parked. I reckon he’d have noticed.

The Triumph Stag was quite a beast. My then best friend bought a new one (I could only afford a secondhand, rusty Cortina at the time). It had the reg APR 26T - I remember saying to him he'd almost got my birthday right on it, with my initial!

Yes maybe.
He was probably on his way back from the races after spending all his money on champagne and cigars...

It’s not bad. We’re on a fairly busy road (A377 from Exeter to Crediton), but it’s quite rural and we and the neighbours twitch the curtains if anything untowards happens outside. Our dog and their dogs are pretty tuned into strangers too...

Now you say it, I think I can see a footprint on the inside of one of the windows in that photo...
I’m going to ring the council in the morning (Victor Meldrew style) and ask them to clear up the detritus.
I went outside and had another look today and there’s also an empty packet of Durex.
I think a professional needs to deal with this. Not an amateur like me.

Yes absolutely, leave it well alone and let the professionals handle it. There may be used needles there for all you know.

I may be unfairly judging Devon by SE London standards there, but you can’t be too careful!

Well I’ve just phoned East Devon district council and they say that they’ll be over to clear it up.
They also said that if they can find any evidence that they can pin on someone then they will.
