Pensions and retirement

As we're all living longer (and possibly working longer) it would be interesting to hear from RUK members on their plans for retirement - will you be packing it in at 50 and moving to Spain, or working until you drop dead?

I'll either pack it in when I'm 60 or when the missus retires by which time I'll be 63. I will however claim my BR and Thomson Holiday pensions when I am 60 and leave the personal pensions until I need them

Maybe in about 10 years time when i'm in my late 50s. We don't have children so i guess that makes things a lot easier...

There's no way I can afford to retire early. It's my own fault for not making arrangements early enough, so I can easily see me working until at least 70, if not longer.

Saved up all my life, dad's given me a gift of a substantial amount of shares, two paid-in pensions + state pension to come in the next 6 years or so and as long as I can continue to look after mum and dad at home rather than dump them on the state, I should inherit their house at some point. I'm 60 this year and don't intend to return to work after caring.

At that point the plan (before Brexit) was to downsize and own a smaller retirement flat/studio here and long-term rent in, yes, Ibiza/Formentera or Menorca at a push so I can split my time at each.

Well, the target is 65 to 68, but I can probably see myself working into my early 70s depending how my circumstances turn out.

I think I'd be totally bored if I wasn't working - unless of course I won the Euromillions and could afford to keep myself busy without an income!!!

I'm lucky, circumstances etc, that I haven't worked full time since I was 48. I do work part time in the spring, summer and autumn, which I get paid. During the winter I do voluntary work. I hope to work part time, for about 20 hours a week until I get my wooden overcoat.

Next week I can swap rail cards, from a Network card to senior railcard.

Worked to 57 , (36 years work is enough I reckon) - but able to collect pension , once mortgage paid and children educated , you do not need a lot of money ..feel I ought to do a bit more work but not in the contractual railway , thanks ..obviously do some voluntary work and so on and basically lead a comfortable life.

Similar to Chiefplanner, I saved hard once my mortgage was paid off and was able to retire partially at 55 and completely at 57. I haven't got any kids so my aim is to spend all my money and the value of my house and run out of money just as I die!

Still got plenty of years left to work, however I may well look at doing a job share at some point. Definitely don’t envisage working full-time past about 55, although probably wouldn’t want to retire completely as there are times when work is a welcome escape from domestic life.
