I need to travel Penrith to Sheffield on 14th March (depart 14.45) and then return from Sheffield to Garsdale on the 16th. Time of return is uncertain so can't use advances. Is my best bet to use a return from Carlisle and start and stop short? Will the same ticket permit travel on both the WCML and S&C? Are there any cleverer options? No rail cards. Thanks for any help.

I'd just about got my head around the Routeing Guide until they changed the rules last October, so I'm not going to stick my neck out and give any definite advice! However, this easement may be useful to you:

300234 Customer travelling from Appleby or Kirkby Stephen to Penrith and beyond may travel via Carlisle. This easment applies in both directions.

If you're definitely sticking to 1445 departure from Penrith and you're willing to slow your journey down a bit and get to Sheffield at 1810 with 53 mins wait in Man Picc you can get an Advance ticket TPE only for £24. Coming back to Garsdale you can get an anytime single for £22.80.

Picking up on Lyndhurst's helpful suggestion, an Anytime Return from Appleby (or Kirkby Stephen) to Sheffield is £33.60 and would be valid for Penrith to Sheffield, and Sheffield to Garsdale. There are no break of journey restrictions on an Anytime Return, so on the outward journey you could start short at Penrith at 1446 and on the return journey alight at Garsdale. To get an itinerary for the outward journey, use the National Rail Enquiries journey planner for an Appleby to Sheffield return journey on your chosen dates and, in the advanced options, opt for via Penrith and also opt for extended interchange times (click on extra half-hour).
