Pennine Way end to CEF/CLY

I'm walking the Pennine Way with my Dad from 16th July and ending on 1st/2nd Aug.

Does anyone with a knowledge of buses know the cheapest way we can get from Kirk Yeltholm to home? 2 adults, 1 Y-P Railcard.

I've looked at buses to Edinburgh and split at Lancaster then ticket to Chapel en le Frith.

We won't buy advanced tickets as we don't know the exact date we'll finish. We are looking at last possible connections home as well.

The only bus service to Kirk Yeltholm itself is the #80 to Kelso. Last bus is at half six, it does not run on Sundays.

The only regular services to a rail staion are indeed to Edinburgh, timetable here, and Berwick here. Alternatively a bus from Kelso to Hawick could then connect you to the express service down to Carlisle.

Just to expand on this then, I think your best bet is to get to Galashiels or Hawick from Kelso and then a bus to Carlisle - last bus midweek is 17:35 from Galashiels or 18:15 from Hawick. Therefore the last bus out of Kelso that you could get is the 16:32 to Galashiels, though that leaves you with a five minute connection only. Tracking even further back, then, you'd want the 14:30 out of Kirk Yeltholm.

The journey is much more difficult is you finish on August 1st, a Sunday. Note that 2nd August is a Bank Holiday in Scotland, so it is very possible that buses will be operating to altered timetables; you might want to call the relevant bus companies.

From Carlisle, a non-railcard single to C-l-F is £47. You can split at Preston and get that for £36.30, or at Preston and Manchester for £36.
