Every one I've been on you get the three bings every now and then-no idea what it could be, was thinking TMS or along those lines?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the TMS on 390's plays tones over the PA to alert train crew to issues with the TMS, but I could be wrong. As others have already mentioned, the tones tend to be driver-guard or catering crew talking to each other, or a passenger pressing the pass com, often the call for aid one in the toilet.

I know that the TMS does on 220/221s though, as a XC one I was on several months ago kept every so often making the "low-high tones x3" over the PA, with the TM then reacting to it by going to the toilet in the carriage and resetting it (or whatever it is they do when they open the access panel and maybe flush it from outside the cubicle?).

There's also a high-pitched warble that you get on the northbound approach to Haymarket which seems to correlate with Selective Door Opening (i.e. not opening those in the rear 2 coaches) on 11-car sets. Don't know if it only sounds in the affected coaches though.

Indeed there is, I had forgotten about it until you mentioned about it.

I also noticed that when this occurred, the letters "SDO" (Selective Door Opening) were displayed on the interior electronic information screens in the carriage I was in (coach G IIRC) As if Joe public will know about either what the noise meant, or "SDO" being displayed.

If it is a CFA, that would mean it's been pulled every 20 minutes or so on every 390 journey I've done!
