It was excellent to see it :)

Were you there?! I was the hooded character running up and down with my iPhone! Ha

Also FYI it was 390 055 running as a 9 car, it also had This Train is Testing on the ECML running along the display boards...nice touch! About 4 staff near the front cab 2 drivers and two others plus another driver (I assume) in the back cab!

Get these on the ECML immediately!

Is it running all the way from Edinburgh to Kings Cross?

Basically I can see a short term alteration for a Virgin Trains ECS movement into Edinburgh for 21:59 and from the same platform leaving at 22:24 is an ECS movement from Edinburgh to Kings Cross, reportedly EC are operating this!

a) It says it's supposed to be in NCL 23:57 - 00:02, so may have ran early for the people posting above.
b) Would EC run an empty train throughout the night all the way to Kings Cross?
c) Whichever train does this empty run (I'm assuming it's the Virgin set) seems to stay around London (you might see it in the sidings around Finsbury Park/Alexandra Palace area) and then head back north late tomorrow night!

<takes detective hat off>

It was early (as expected when your trying to catch something different) coming in at 23:45 and leaving at 23:51. As for the rest I'm certain somebody posted the whole run down of the movements, I'll see if I can find it and re-post. Basically it said EDB - KGX with a stop off in London when complete.

It certainly runs northbound tomorrow but I didn't fancy the 02:40 visit to NCL!;);)

Here are some more times :

5Z10 night of 12/3/12 Doncaster 01/57 Tue, Peterborough 03.06-03.15, Stevenage 04/17. Seems a very slow schedule.

Spends Tuesday at Ferme Park, should be visible.

5Z11 night of 13/3/12 Stevenage 23/54, Peterborough 00/46 Wed, Doncaster 01/47.

Does anyone know the reason for this move ?

There you go....thanks to those who posted this

Interesting that it has been delivered with Virgin branding but 054 wasn't.

It was delivered with the same "Alstom 11-car Pendolino" branding as 390054, it has had the Virgin branding added retrospectively at the beginning of the year.

Crikey, it is quite a strange sight to see a Pendolino sitting in Newcastle station!

Presumably it would need at least two drivers in the leading cab anyway- a West Coast driver that signs the traction, and an East Coast driver that signs the route.

I'm not sure whether it's already been mentioned, but 57304 is the thunderbird loco that is being stabled at Newcastle for these workings.

I think Rich was talking about supplying electricity to the carriages.

Going back on topic, would Pendolinos more likely to used by First Hull Trains for their Londdon to Hull service if the TPE electrfication project was finished?

Well until IEP arrives they're the only off the shelf IC EMU be built for the UK. I could certainly see a five or six car baby Pendo working quite well for HT.

Thanks for those! Certainly is quite odd seeing a Pendo in Newcastle. Anyone got any shots from elsewhere on the ECML?

It ran using East Coasts safety case, VT don't having running rights on the east coast.

Factual News - The trial went well, i havent heard of any gauging or clearence issues and the stock is at Hornsey ahead of the run tonight.

There was also a Virgin 57 Thunderbird on standby. It was at Newcastle but i am unsure if it followed the Pendo in case of an emergency

Anything could be done if there was enough will to override or repeal relevant legislation and enough money to throw at it. But as others have explained, in the case of King's Cross the cost of working around the current constraints would be astronomically huge.

It has to be remembered that while an extension of King's Cross might be good now (in a Transport Tycoon universe at least), future developments (Thameslink for suburban/inter-regional & classic-compatible HS2 services replacing King's Cross inter-city services on the northern half of the ECML) will probably lead to a significant reduction in the number of services using King's Cross so any multi-billion pound megaproject would turn into a white elephant.

In my opinion it would be a good move to have a 250-260m tilting EMU similar to the Class 390 for future inter-regional and inter-city service on the ECML once the IC125 and IC225 fleets are retired or shifted elsewhere as a cheaper (and already proven) alternative to the ridiculously overmanaged IEP. An EMU with capability of enhanced speeds would be a far better way to increase the service level on the ECML than adding tons of carriages to existing trains and embarking on infrastructure megaprojects to match. It doesn't need to be another order of the Class 390 exactly as used by Virgin, it could be a "Class 391" or "Class 390/5" with certain specifications changed to improve on the 390 and/or account for any different requirements specific to the ECML.

OK, 4 weeks and how much are we approaching the speed of light?

Theres only one comparable project I can think of and that's timed out at 11 years...

It will only involve only part of the tunnel

Funny - you didn’t mention the third bore until John 55 did so! hmmmmm

The problem with doing the switching north of the tunnel is that there is only a small gap between Gas Works and Copenhagen tunnels. The station and approach is much busier now than it was in the past.

between Gas Works and Copenhagen tunnels, at Belle Isle, you have separate cross over’s down fast/up fast, down fast up slow, and up slow down slow. Bear in mind that you also have Copenhagen Junction and the North London incline to access the up or down slow ( I think there is an up slow/down slow crossover inside Copenhagen tunnel for this purpose)

I think Gas Works Tunnel ( all bores) are bi directional but the rest of the line is not. I cant see away of managing all of the conflicting movements other than right outside of the station. in mind that directly north of Copenhagen tunnel is the flyover to allow the up slow to cross form one side of the line to the other.

There are some cross over’s at Holloway Junction but not enough and then you get to the complex area that is Finsbury Park.
