Good Day All

I have a day off in Glasgow coming up and having never ridden a 390, am contemplating a little excursion. I wondered if readers might suggest how far south I'd have to go to get some high speed running, climbs, tight turns and nice scenery? Carlisle? Penrith? Oxenholme?

Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.

If you can, I'd go down to Warrington Bank Quay - that way you get all the scenery across the Lakes

Preston is what I'd recommend, it's rather dull beyond there if you're just after scenery.

Preston is about fair, that way you get both Beattock and Shap and a lovely view of the lakes

I think that's a bit unfair on the stretch south of Lancaster - it's a brilliant run speed-wise to Preston and really demonstrates the 390's power. It also offers some decent views, especially over the town of Garstang.

xx40 Euston trains will be Pendolinos
xx00 Birmingham trains could be Pendolinos or Voyagers, more likely the latter

I agree with the above contributors that a return trip to Preston would be your best bet.

Do it on a Saturday. They do a "Shoppers Special" for the people of Carlisle (valid in both directions) for £17.40 return valid on all Virgin services.

And what's the problem with that? I don't believe the OP specified it must end in the Lakes - Lancaster-Preston is just as good for Oxenholme-Lancaster and Carlisle-Penrith for scenery.

All the journey is great though, although mine starts at Wolves mostly.

I thought as far as Oxenholme would give me a good helping of scenery, but is there much top speed running north of there? Or do I need to do Lancaster - Preston for the high speed?

There is 125mph running between Lancaster and Preston, so I don't know how 'the really fast stuff' is on the Trent Valley section. 125mph is 125mph.
