For what it's worth, I also hate Pendolinos. They're cramped, have no luggage space, pitifully small windows, and they make me seasick.

Used the Swiss New Pendolinos twice last week. One was an ex-Cisalpino ETR610, the other a newer SBB RABe503. Both were noticeably better than the 390. The former was the better of the two, with around 75% of the seats in bays of four with full tables, all aligned perfectly with windows significantly bigger than on our Pendolinos. The latter was also more pleasent than a 390 but only half of the seats were in bays of four and they only had half sized tables. The seats were fine for me, though maybe too narrow for others, and well-padded.

I've never taken a long journey on a Voyager, but do notice the larger windows. The improved 222s show that the basic design was reasonable, but that the implementation had a few flaws...

Has anyone here used the PKP Intercity (Polish state railways) Pendolinos? What do they think of their interiors? I think these trains have larger windows than our 390s but do not tilt.

Kinda off-topic question, how long will VT (or whoever ends up running the West Coast franchise) run the Pendolino's as the main fleet if you know what I mean?

Will they be run on the main WCML routes for the entirety of the 390's life? Or will they be cascaded like others do?

Give them to Iran. They have the right idea to deal with stock we all (as a majority) hate

On a more logical side, perhaps maybe there's an opportunity to export them abroad to countries which currently use their own Pendolinos. Czech Republic, Poland and Italy come to mind, not that they would want them anyway - they've better versions than us!

The interiors look extremely similar, if not identical, to the RABe503 I travelled on (reviewed in my last post). As for the train, I'm also pretty sure it doesn't tilt but that's all I know technically.

The DfT have reportedly stated that Pendolinos could be used on the Hope Valley route post-HS2. I'll believe that when I see it, given that one glaring issue with operating Pendolinos over the route is the complete lack of overhead wires at present...

Personally, I'll be surprised if the Pendolinos see use anywhere other than the WCML; they'll be just over thirty years old by the earliest date that HS2 Phase 2 is expected to open and no doubt expected to remain in squadron service until that point, which is a pretty typical lifespan for frontline Intercity stock.

No reason for the Pendolinos to move. Once HS2 is open, then clearly the WCML will have a different role than it has now, so maybe replacement stock will have more of a commuter emphasis?

Slightly off topic, but will the "Classic Compatible" stock for HS2 that continues along the existing railway lines have tilt? If not, won't they be slower on the WCML than the 390s and cause issues?

On Pendolinos I dislike the fact that if you are beneath the photograph you basically haveNo storage and Really limited air con! When I travel there is an XX:19 Class 350 or XX:22 Class 390. I usually choose the 350.

The 390 ran through several OHLE stanchions during the derailment. The same kind of stanchion which did this to a Mk4 vehicle:

The 390 may well be more crash worthy than the Mk4, but if a 390 vehicle collided with a similar OHLE stanchion at the same speed and the same angle it would have probably suffered a similar outcome.

You say that in jest, but Pendolini have a pretty decent safety record. Look at Grayrigg for instance.

Went on 2 390's last night, they are sordid little grief holes. If Branson was indeed trying to make them feel like aircraft then he failed. If his 747's and A340's feel that cramped then they are very different from the ones belonging to other airlines I have travelled on.

Are the new seat number stickers around the digital reservation displays a relatively new addition? They very clearly label the Coach letter and the seat numbers and are a simple but effective improvement.

I also notice the "Virgin" network maps in the vestibules on the Pendolinos now show Virgin East Coast as part of the overall network alongside Virgin West Coast. I hadnt noticed this before.

Tried the new BEAM app too yesterday - I quite liked it, some decent movies on there. Watched most of Wolf of Wall Street which passed the journey quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised if the app was only there to try and pacify those in seats without a window.

I don't know if you were being serious or not, but I doubt they installed an expensive entertainment system, had an app developed and acquired public performance rights for content because 25% of seats have limited view (given how often we're told that people don't want to look out of windows these days).

I noticed the new stickers on a unit back in July, so they are slowly being rolled out. Agreed it makes it a lot clearer for non regulars at which seat is the window and which is the aisle seat.

Always a matter of opinion. I find Pendolinos a little small on the inside, but 'cosy' and quite comfortable. I think the fairly good sound insulation probably helps there. I do, however, know a coupel of people who dislike travelling on them because the tilting gives them motion sickness. I haven't gone any further than Euston to Birmingham on one when seated (stood all the way when I used one to Manchester during ECML disruption), but had no issue with them, apart from the comically small luggage racks.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Voyagers or you were sitting under the pantograph? Pendolino overhead racks are reasonably generous and very square and low down, meaning they are very useful for reasonably large items of luggage. Not quite as huge as Desiros, but vastly, vastly better than the barely-a-coat-rack you get on all UK Bombardier products.
