Seems like nearly every Pendo hand-drier is u/s

What does "u/s" mean. If it's useless then I don't think I've ever come across an on-train hand dryer that works. Was on a train once (can't remember what type) that seemed to have a hand dryer that you'd normally see in a building attached to the wall!

The only "normal" handryer I've seen on a train was on a Thameslink 319 in 2005. Did a much better job at drying my hands than the washbaisin units on SWTs 158s

As noted over in the Rolling Stock section, WSMR appear to have installed Dyson Airblade hand dryers in their new stock. Bet they didn't come cheap- but at least they work!

The Dyson driers are fine if you've got very small hands... If you've got "normal" hands and take the trouble to wash as far as the wrists then you can accidently push your hands in far enough to touch the "slops" zone at the base. Yuck.

To be fair the only hand dryer I've ever used that isn't useless is a dyson airblade, and I assume they are pretty expensive.

Can't say I generally have problems with hand dryers, I quite like the Xlerator by Excel. The ones I hate though are those combi soap-water-dryer things, the water is generally too short for the time and so is the dryer. Often I find myself putting my hands back in, dodging the water and soap and having to wait for the drying cycle to start again.

Never come across a Pendolino hand dryer that does not work...

When new, and for some time afterwards, the Class 185 handdryers were spectacularly useless. They either stayed on for 0.5 seconds, would only worked if you hit them and the stop straight away, or they would start working and then not switch off for about 10 mins thus turning the toilet cubicle into a sauna.

There has been a concerted effort of late to try and get them working properly, and I have to say that the ones I have used recently have all been actually ok!

So which is it?

I find that approx 3 out of 4 times they don't work

And I find that 90+% of the time they work and I use them weekly. Your experience doesn't mean everyone else's experience is identical

You need to go to Glasgow Central station then. They have the new Dyson hand dryers that blast your hands with cool air from all directions and flippin' 'eck, they WORK. It's one of the reasons I don't mind paying to use the toilets in GLC. They're clean and the hand driers work lol...

Thing with Central is, right, you gotta pay. Yeah, you gotta do this at most big stations for the loo, but in the morning, if I need to use the toilet, I can just wait to get to college so I can pee for free!

I can generally get Pendo ones working, but I normally have to peek under to see where the IR sensor is, then hold my hands directly underneath it to do so. Ditto for the ones in Voyagers, 222s and Disastros, too. :roll:

To be honest, the hand-dryers and accessible bog doors on the Sprinters are the worst I've ever seen. I'm thankful for that though, as it's the only thing on Sprinters that I can find fault in!
(That is to say: I'd rather endure a crap hand-dryer and a constantly jamming door if it means I can get a train where everything else works perfectly! 8) )

But on the subject of hand-dryers - And the fact that most train ones are about as much use as a condom to a Eunuch - Why the heck are train companies wasting money on that crap in the first place? I know that paper towels are messy and a right royal pain in the arse, but what on Earth is wrong with a Towelmaster?

...After all; Over 200 automatic towels fitted into the HST fleet can't be a mistake, unlike those hand "dryers" installed on the Desiros ...
And it does make me wonder: If the Germans are so damn good at building trains and other complex things, why can't they make a single handetröckner that actually works? :roll:

Well, it's not like we used to have a problem with that in the 70's! Besides, Towelmasters are both quicker and more environmentally friendly than hand-dryers! 8)

It can't be that hard to make a hand dryer that works! I do think that the failure rate may seem worse for some, depending on how the stock is allocated, because I bet the broken ones simply aren't fixed..

The incredibly fast dryers, which are noisy, at least work straight away - even before warming up. The traditional ones only get useful when warm, and the heating elements take ages to warm up if the dryer isn't used very frequently.

Hand towels are wasteful and get thrown all over the floor, and a towelmaster would not be hygenic and also subject to vandalism.

I tend to use the arse of my jeans, works just as well always there and never out of order Trouble is you sometimes get a wet arse if your hands are soaked but a quick flick before you dry tends to solve that.

As for hand dryers I work in a pub with the dyson airblades and they are ace fun, sadly they aren't in the staff loo

oh and I've never had a problem with a Class 175 on the hand drying front

On a slight variation what are thoughts on the provsion of anti bac wipes in train loos and they are notorious for being unclean, possibly some in a cubby hole in the wall for grime conscious travellers to have a wipe around, or the paper covers for the loo seat like you find in America. Then again thinking about it, it would just end up as another thing that can get vandalised

No offence but i have never seen that happen to anyone, perhap you have bigger than normal hands
