The National Rail website says they both have gates. So only the OP can clarify how he got through them, eg they were left open due to being unstaffed.

Of course, I don't doubt gates are there, tho anecdotally (and I'm not on SWR network) I'm increasingly finding gates switched out and left open - presumably due to staffing issues. Of course no idea if that is an issue at these 2 stations.
