Good afternoon all.

Appreciate this may be a common theme on this forum, I had a letter drop trough my door this morning, not addressed to me but I just saw parent / guardian went into auto pilot and opened as I thought it was for my child

It's from a company called IRCAS about a penalty fair for not having a ticket said person on the letter dose not live at my address or I've ever heard of them.

Appreciate its probley a common thing of someone giving duff details but is there anything I need to do ?

Also dose a ticket inspector ask for ID or anything little worried why my address was given...... is it on someone ID?!?

Reseal the envelope, and pop it into a post box marked 'Not known at this address'. You could also write 'opened in error'.

There will now follow a whole load of posts about identity theft, it being illegal to open post not addressed to you (it isn't) and other things.

ID is asked for but either someone is not carrying anything (it's not a legal requirement to carry ID in the UK), or is misleading the inspector, so we have to take their word for it

Thanks for the quick comments.

I've lived at my address for quite awhile and never get post adressed to different people hence the auto pilot.

I'll see what happens, if it was addressed to parents/guardians clearly a kid trying it on.

I'll see if anything come of it but I refuse to call this company given the only way to call them is via there Premium rate number ....

My main concern was if someone had any ID with my adress on but looking at the the comment by methecooldude it appears I just lost the adress roulette

Don't ever call these people, if you do decide to contact them do it in writing, either by email or a proper letter, because then you know what you said and - in due course - you have a record of their response.

Possibly someone who knows your address - an acquaintance of your child? - gave your address. The fact that the address was valid when they gave it would be enough to satisfy whoever recorded it, some form of official "ID" with your address on isn't required because nobody needs to carry something like this anyway.

Agree - don't waste your time / money calling IRCAS - it's their problem not yours after all - but do keep an eye out for other post from same place or from any train company that might write - and make sure you rtn it to sender as described.

It may be that someone gave a false address (might even be someone who lives at another house on your street) or it may be that IRCAS have got address muddled up, or that the staff on the train made an error when recording the address they were given.

I assume nothing in the letter indicated to you that they gave a name of anyone at your address / yours or a family members name.

Thanks for your response! It is appreciated

They do have a contact us link so may try that at least as you say its documented then.

It is what it is , and it's my fault I should have been more clear in my post my child is 3 so unless he's been having the time of his life behind my back I doubt it.

Just a question appreciate any ticket inspectors want to out themselves, when someone gives an adress are any checks done at all or is it just a basic check to make sure it's a real uk adress ?

Concerned I'll get a black mark against my address!

Perfect and no not at all , completely different name , not an ounce of anything to do with us !

Only reason I posted on this forum is I see the odd post from someone the other end saying they gave a false adress but not normally the victim of said adress !

Thanks for your all super quick replies!

For adults checks are done against electoral rolls or credit reference agencies, but for a child neither would be possible so there can't be more than checking it's a real address.

If the postcode is exactly right, it could well be a close neighbour's child (typically ~10 houses). If it's a bit wrong, that might be a clue as to the real person's address. But it's not your problem. At least they didn't give your child's name; that would have generated some work for you (even though they are only three!).

Super quick update!

I contacted IRCAS about 30 minutes ago via there online form

And just received there reply

"Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email. Having investigated the case, I am satisfied that the aforementioned person does not reside at your address. I have closed the case accordingly. Thank you.

Kind regards,"

So all is good !

Thanks for help all
