A few weeks ago I purchased tickets online (Trainline website) and used my YP railcard to get discount.
Last week I travelled using those tickets... but didn't realise my YP railcard had expired! I know a stupid mistake.
Onboard the train a ticket inspector pointed out my YP railcard had expired and said I had to pay a penalty fare. I asked about paying the difference or buying a new full price ticket but he said the only option was to pay the penalty fare which was twice the full price ticket.
I fully accepted this was my fault and I was stupid not to check the railcard before travel. I paid the full amount by debit card (luckily I just had enough money in my bank account to pay it) and this amount has now been taken from my bank account.
The ticket and my YP railcard were both taken from me apparently "for evidence" but I was not given any receipt or note to say this had been done.
I was given a form that said Penalty Fare on it. I did not have to give my name or address or any details, the only thing he wrote on it was the amount to pay and that I had paid the full amount.
I asked him what happens now and he mumbled "nothing" then walked off but I was dubious he wasn't very clear. I know I was in the wrong but having never been in trouble like this I dont think it was too much to want some explanation about what was going on
Having read a few posts on this forum I am terrified of now being prosecuted and getting a criminal record for what was just a stupid mistake I wont make again.
