So might it be prudent to ask WMT what action they are are now taking to prevent similar re-occurance?
And seek compensation for the stress caused by this incident. They'll probably just give a generic corporate response unless you affect their wallet.

What an interesting (and outraging) case. I am, however, doubtful OP will return. They would have received a response to their CCTV requests and complaints by now?

Hi. First, well done and congratulations. I had the exact response from the AS. I am assuming we won our appeal and we no longer are liable to pay the fee, right? It's clearly stated.. but I am pretty sure that's the outcome? Thanks.
You would be better to start a new thread if you are looking for assistance, rather than asking a question of a poster who hasn't been here for several months.

I was told by a member of Virgin ticket office staff about 10 years ago when I asked for a ticket from a station with a different origin (my local) on a different line. The fare was either the same or very similar, I can't recall now.

The ticket clerk asked why I hadn't bought it there, fair enough, so I explained I'd been dropped off and would need to get back to my home station. I was then very bizarrely told I couldn't do that, on a basic anytime day return which had no break of journey restrictions, and they weren't prepared to sell it to me.
I had the same experience with Virgin Trains at the ticket office at Manchester Piccadilly once, years ago, long before the ticket gates were put in. I requested a return from a nearby station to Manchester. They asked me why I didn't buy the ticket before boarding the train, as it's not permitted to buy onboard. They still wouldn't sell me the ticket from where I had come from even after I explained that the station in question has no way of buying a ticket before boarding the train. I left without paying, then later on may way back to make the return journey a different person was serving and they happily sold me the ticket correctly at that point. Bizarre!

GWR are quite happy to sell me, either on board or at the little booth at Bristol TM, a return to anywhere from Montpelier, even though I got on at Stapleton Road (where there are no staff or ticket machines). Montpelier is right near to a curry restaurant I am fond of, and quite often I'll go there for my tea after a day in Cardiff, Oxford, Bath, etc.

This would be a fit case for taking to ombudsman, if they WMR fail to resolve your complaint.
