Peculiar stopping patterns on TPE

Obviously there's a lot of disruption due to the route upgrade, and TPR services are being routed via Hebden Bridge.

I notice that a lot of these are stopping at Castleton when one would normally expect a stop in the area to be at Rochdale. What is the reason for the calls at this usually sleepy station ?

In the Rochdale direction it looks as if the Blackburn to Rochdale service couldn't call without getting caught up by the Newcastle, so it skips Castleton.

It will have been a case of picking something else that could consistently call both ways without knackering its path - hence you have the Scarborough picking it up.

The local stoppers (2Jxx, 2Nxx, 2Bxx) were absolutely destroying the service of everything else during diversions, especially if Rochdale West was sticking to the regulating policy for them. The signallers on that line were complaining of seemingly endless phone calls regarding delays.

I was on duty in Rochdale West the first time the TPE stop at Castleton was added in, a colleague at Castleton East pointed it out to me and expressed concern that people might not have checked the calling pattern before boarding as it happens to be first stop Brighouse. He estimated around 20 people boarded the first one

I bet they were surprised at the relative luxury of a 185 (or equivalent TPE stock) !

Its certainly an improvement over the random unit generator that normally gets thrown at them.

That was certainly the thinking. However I see that it has now been validated with both stops for 19.09.26.

I can understand the customer confusion and apparently there has been an enormous amount of it. Until then, it was all but unheard of that a train could call at Castleton and not at Rochdale. No publicity was ever produced to explain any of this, it was down to someone carefully checking the screen.
