Peak Time Restictions - Merseyside

Hi, are there any peak time restrictions in operation when travelling between two stations within the Merseyside Area?

Yesterday afternoon I travelled from MNR to NLW and asked for an off peak return at a cost of £5. The booking office asked for my time of departure from NLW and then stated that as I was travelling back on a Northern Rail Service between 4pm and 6pm then it would be cheaper to get a Saveaway all zones that had no restriction (20p more expensive) than buy an anytime return at the cost of £7 ...

Is this correct?

Probably, but it depends on where MNR and NLW are. (i.e.; please put the station names in)

The evening restrictions are generally on tickets requiring Northern Rail services, but not those just on Merseyrail. They have been largely ignored over the years (I have often been sold off-peak tickets for travel in the evening).

NRE says the following for a Y9 restriction:

Not valid on Merseyrail City Line services timed to depart after 06:30 and before 09:30 and after 16:00 and before 18:00.

Not valid on Merseyrail Northern and Wirral Line services timed to depart after 06:30 and before 09:30.

Same restrictions apply to both outward and return legs.

I can't help but wonder what a "Merseyrail City Line" service is when it is at home...

Y9 does not have evening restrictions on Merseyrail services (ie Northern/Wirral lines), but does for other journeys on Merseyside.
This has been the case for a while, it's not a new restriction.
Day Savers (Merseyrail) and Saveaways (Merseytravel) are unrestricted after 0930 (and have no railcard discount).
So I think you were sold the right ticket.
The Saveaway covers bus and ferry too.

That is, unless joke2711 intended to go to Hoylake via Warrington rather than St. Helens (which would mean the Saveaway would not be valid, of course).

The City Line, as far as I can see, covers:

London Midland (Liverpool-Liverpool South Parkway)

East Midlands Trains (Liverpool-Liverpool South Parkway-Hunts Cross*-Hough Green*)

Arriva Trains Wales (Earlestown - Newton le Willows).

Northern (Liverpool-Garswood/Hough Green/Newton le Willows)

Transpennine Express (Liverpool-Liverpool South Parkway)

*Limited service

I was more commenting on the fact that Merseyrail City Line is not a TOC and therefore cannot operate any services.

I know which services Merseytravel brand as City Line, although of course no mention is made of this branding anywhere on stations or on publicity from the TOCs who do operate the services.

The fares in question are almost certainly all set by, or on behalf of, Merseytravel if that helps explain why that term is used.

According to Merseytravel, it refers specifically to Northern services. Arriva Trains Wales, East Midlands Trains, TransPennine Express, London Midland and Virgin Trains merely run trains on the same lines.
