I used to volunteer on Peak Rail from late '88 to '91 and there was always a certain cynicism towards the management but I recently read something called the "Peak Rail Gossip Page" and it seems like there is open warfare there now. What has gone wrong to spoil such a potentially great line?

Happens often where groups of individuals have to work together not just preserved railways unfortunately
I have spoken to many that have left some of the bigger preserved lines for that very reason, often with the volunteers treated like 2nd class citizens by the management .
Often it is as they out grow themeselves and become commercial loosing their roots and vounteers on the way IMHO

Sadly it's very true. I've been involved in a number of volenteer organisations both inside and outside of transport, and in both a volenteer and paid capacity, and with one exception (and that's probably because I only get over a few times a year) I've always found the politics and infighting too much to handle, and it's put me off getting involved in more. It's one thing when it's paid work, but when you are giving your own time it is so easy just to walk away and not look back. It often goes both ways too, management can be the problem but you also get volenteers who are too far up themselves.

I have to agree with chriscooper. As a volunteer, I'd like to work on the projects I want to work on, but as a paid member of staff, I realise that you need to keep the money rolling in to keep the railway running and move projects on. All heritage railways have to be commercial in some ways so that they can survive.

I actually walked away from Peak Rail in 1991 because it turned into a state where "work" finished earlier and earlier on Saturday afternoon and it then devolved into a pub crawl to (The Star?) and other pubs with Sunday morning being spent with hangovers and incidences of petty vandalism at Darley Dale. I decided that my long return trip from London was being wasted.
Having said that there was a certain sense of cameraderie in those days which seems to have been lost if what I read is an accurate reflection of PR today.

Incidentally looking at the second link why is it that Railways HAVE to be "economically viable" but cycle/footpaths don't? Does the government ever study the amount of traffic carried on a road and, having decided it isn't "economically viable", close it?

Come to that, how is it improving roads is an investment while improving railway infrastructure is a subsidy?

i also used to volenter at peak rail until very recently left due to the amount of backstabbing i understand there are backstabbers at every heritage railway but to many at peak rail it just starting to feel like everyone is watching every move you make also a spate of new rules have just come in and thats added to my thoughts of leaving why pay £16 a year for peak rail when i can volenter at severn valley for £18 a year
