Peak and Off-peak combination

I need to get the 09.28 from Epsom to Guildford next Tuesday. This is classed as peak, as it is before 09.30. If the train is late, which it often is by 2 minutes, is it still classed as peak?
I was thinking of getting a single from Epsom to Ashtead and then a cheap day return from Epsom to Guildford, so I can return to Epsom. Would this work? The off-peak part of the ticket starts at Ashtead at 09.32, but technically not from the time it departs Epsom.

The restrictions on that off peak day return apply until 9am (not 9.30) so you don’t need to do any splitting.

There are two Off Peak Day Returns available between Epsom and Guildford:

Via Leatherhead £13.60 not valid on trains timed to depart between 04:29 and 09:00
Via Wimbledon £15.50 not valid to trains timed to depart between 04:29 and 09:30

The 0928 departure from Epsom to Guildford is routed via / calls at Leatherhead, so presumably the cheaper £13.60 Off Peak Day Return (route via Leatherhead) is all that's required.

Which gets me thinking: Hypothetically, what happens if you buy for the cheaper route and then immediately excess it (for both legs. let's say) to the more expensive route? Does it keep its original peak restrictions, or does it inherit the peak restrictions of the ticket you've excessed it to?

You get the restrictions of the ticket you have excessed up to.

I wouldn't be sure that this will be possible.

Has the OP indicated that they wish to pay extra to return via Wimbledon, or indeed to go anywhere near London Waterloo?

I don't know which route the OP would prefer to take, hence "if necessary". I appreciate it might not be necessary.

It seems odd that the same TOC has different lengths of morning peak for opposite routeings for otherwise the same journey.
