My girlfriend bought the following ticket on a train, after getting on at Wennington, a station with no ticket facilities:

Class: STD
Ticket Type: OFF-PEAK R
16-25
From: WENNINGTON
To: CAMBRIDGE
Route: NOT VIA LONDON
Validity: AS ADVERTISED
Price: 79.05

The guard was from Northern rail. I went on the northern rail website and they advertise the exact same ticket, except with route 'Any Permitted' for £77.10.

She even took the machine from him, and tried to find the £77.10 ticket on the machine, she couldn't.

This is a bit of a pain, as she would have preferred to travel via London.

I thought that you weren't supposed to be penalized for buying your ticket on the train, after getting on at a station with no ticket facilities. Any info about what happened would be appreciated.

She wasn't penalised; it was a mistake/error (either a mistake by the Guard in not finding the ticket, or an error in the software on the Guard's machine).

Contact Northern and hopefully they can resolve the matter.

I'm sorry, the ticket inspector/guard just allowed a passenger to take his ticket machine?

Probably not completely take but just look at the screen. Guards have done it to me before when I was unsure what fare to pick!

Then it got issued with the wrong railcard discount but that was sorted after haha...

I believe I'm right in saying that said ticket is in fact valid via London (inc the underground) due to the fare being higher.

A copy and paste from brfares:

OFF-PEAK R
SVR Route
NOT VIA LONDON Validity
AS ADVERTISED
Restrictions
2V**CROSSCOUNTRY OFF PEAK Adult
£119.80 Child
£59.90 ◊
Outward & Return:* VALID ON ANY TRAIN AFTER 0930 M-F
*Fare Setter: CROSSCOUNTRY
OFF-PEAK R
SVR Route
✠ANY PERMITTED Validity
AS ADVERTISED
Restrictions
3A**OFF PEAK TO/VIA LDN (NOT KINGS Adult
£116.80 Child
£58.40
Outward:* NO ARR IN LDN EUS PRE 1005 M-F
Return:* NO DEP FROM LDN EUS PRE 0905 M-F
*Fare Setter: VIRGIN WEST COAST

No surprise that XC sets the higher fare with more restrictive times!

Good luck getting onto the Underground with a ticket marked 'not via London'.

Obviously it's too late now but a zero fate change of route excess could have been obtained at an intermediate station to get a ticket with a Maltese cross for travel on the Underground.

Considering they were overcharged by the grand total of £1.95, a free 1 day voucher would be a pretty good result.
