I have just spotted episode 3 of this on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm and would have expected an alert or comments on here... (Apols if my search has missd a thread already running.) I shall be interested to see what it is like, the last few weeks have been so busy that I missed parts 1 and 2, although I think I was vaguely aware of the series.

You don't say! I wonder if they ration him to mentioning that once per programme?
Tonight was the S of France, and very enjoyable. I like his presentation style so I admit I am prejudiced in the programme's favour, but I do think it's as good as Portillo's.

It's mildly interesting, a bit like the numerous Michael Portillo series though maybe a less polished presentation. As with those, there's quite a bit of off-train activity making up the time (or padding it out, depending how you look at it), presumably aiming to appeal to a wider audience. I'd count it as worth watching if convenient, but I wouldn't rush home to catch it.

I agree, the train seems just a means to an end to get somewhere non railway.

I watched eps 1 on YouTube the other day and you can skip the boring bits like where he goes to the farm.

Which is what trains do for most people.

But I expect to see Paul driving trains as what the title of the programme suggests, not blowing a mountain horn etc. It’s another halfway mashup, bits for the normals and bits for the cranks.

I have enjoyed the series, although I am not convinced by Paul Merton's professed ignorance of cooking and the French (and English!) languages. But on the non-railway theme I enjoyed seeing last night, for the first time AFAIK, flamingos actually flying, rather than standing on one leg.

As was last night's episode, which included a brief 'whistle stop' visit to each of the following... Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Windermere Jetty, Settle and Carlisle Railway, Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway, Murton Park station/Derwent Valley Light Railway (for a jaunt along the line on a pump trolley), as well as Keighley and Worth Valley and finally the North Yorkshire Moors Railways.
