Pathfinders token discount on Scenic Settler

Ive been debating whether to do this tour for a while but wouldnt be joining the tour till crewe, however the £65 price tag is just too steep, it seems though maybe from Pathfinder has been looking on this forum as they have just introduced a £5 discount to that tour for people joining at Crewe, I think there still off the mark there maybe £45 would get some more punters on board but a poxy £5 is just pointless, if they are not filling there tours they need to get real and realise especially on the back of Christmas £60 quid is just over the top, maybe a fair price if your on the tour from Bristol but not Crewe,If your reading this post Pathfinder go to £45 and i think you will find quite a few people joiing at Crewe me included, Having structured pricing for tours like this is the only way to get more people on board.

how about it? they have done it on a tour before this for Crewe passengers think they should follow suit....£45 will get a few on board

read it wrong its for the tour before this although they sholuld do the same on this tour maybe £20 instead of a £5 though...id be there at £45 but not £60

Its ok thinking promoters should charge £XX but whilst this may get people on board it will not necessarily generate the revenue required to enable it to run. Charging £45 from Crewe may well actively encourage a lot of people to drive there for the train, instead of getting on further south, say at Birmingham. (After all, 4 of you save £20 each, but it will only cos £30 to drive to Crewe, or £7.50 each, saving £12.50) So instead of paying £65, all these passengers book a ticket at £45. Result, tour operator's income doesn't meet the running costs of the tour - which are the same whether the passengers decide to join at Bristol, Birmingham, Crewe or even Carlisle. How does the promoter generate this missing income, charge £70 from Bristol instead of £65? The only difference would be if seats can be resold for different legs of the trip, but I doubt marketing a day out to Crewe for 'normals' in December would have a great uptake!

Incidentally, £5 or so seems to be about the going rate for discounts for those getting on during the later pick ups on tours - Retro gave £5 off for certain borders on its Oldham Loop/Cumbrian Coast trip, and the SRPS is giving £4 off for those boarding its Lincoln trip south of Berwick next month.

Another point to bear in mind, in December 2005, the fare from Crewe to Carlisle behind DRS Class 20s was £49.50 - do many people expect it to have reduced 4 years later. It could be much worse, you could be paying £69.50 to go from Chesterfield to Buxton!

i read it wrong anyway the discount was for the earlier tour....They should at least offer an advanced booking discount if nothing else...I dont see the point in driving miles just to get your moneys worth from a high price. I think most people feel there prices sre too high, if they have to cancel tours surely they must realise this themselves

I wonder what the likely hood of getting a pair of 31s for this trip are?

Hanson only have 31190 operational don't they? I believe DBS have no 37s available over Christmas, therefore if-as I suspect will-they can only source one 31-then you'll have a 66 / 67 in tandem with the 31, which is kak.

Apparently this has been caped as Network Rail will not allow 31s haul anymore than 8 coaches?

Is this waffle or is there any truth in this? Just checked Pathfinder website and tour still advertised as running.

Rumour correct! Pathfinder website boldly proclaims traction changed to 56 haulage.

As everybody expected from the time this tour was announced some months back, it is not going to be 31s. Glad I didn't book flights over for this one as I suspected from the word go it would not happen.

My annual post Christmas trip to the UK will involve GM spinning in the South West/South Wales instead.

I think the idea was to have 2 x 31's on load 12 or 13. As it happens, only 31190 is available and just one class 31 on such a heavy train is untenable. Hence the Grid.

A class 40 which always sells, pressure vent stock for those who don't like coffins, one of the last opportunities to sample diesel haulage around the Oldham Loop, and some rear track. As the Pathfinder brochure says itself, "something for everybody". Why then was nobody booking on this tour then?
