Lol, thanks I just assumed that there'd be some kind of key the driver uses, as I thought it might be a bit risky that undesirables could burst in there at any moment!

Regards missing stops, I've never missed one myself, although last year a friend and I had arranged to some other friends in Brough where one of them was celebrating her birthday; we got the train from Manchester, it was a slow journey, and when we finally got to Brough it turned out we should have gone to Brough in the Lake District and we had gone to Brough near Hull.

I blame the friend for telling us to go to Brough when in fact the Lake District Brough doesn't even have a train station!

Sorry if this is a stupid question but are drivers' cabs openable from outside the cab? I always thought they weren't!

You usually need the magic device known as a T-Key. A wonderful device which every proper railwayman should own in his / her lifetime.

Incidentally, we had another (self inflicted) missed stop today. Drunken old sod, not paying attention to the "WE ARE NOW ARRIVING AT COLWYN BAY" ATOS Annie announcement, nor the flashing red "WE ARE NOW ARRIVING AT COLWYN BAY" LED display, nor the fact that the train was slowing down considerably and entering a station platform, decided it was OUR fault for only allowing 30 seconds between doors opening and closing that he didn't rise from his chair 3 rows from the door (he had no luggage) and get off. He had a go at me, he had a go at the guard, and finally, when we did manage to get him off the train at Rhyl (following some VERY pointed, deliberate announcements from the guard "If you are planning to get off, please start making your way to the doors NOW") he decided to saunter to the front of the train and bang on the drivers' cab door and lay into him as well.

On the other 40 or so stops on the journey today, everyone else (drunk, sober, impaired, disabled, young, old) managed it, yet because he didn't, it's our fault.

A fellow passenger nearly slept through Derby today. It's a long wait at Derby on the Nottingham-Birmingham service too. Luckily his mate who was meeting him there spotted him from the platform and got on to wake him up and drag him off.

Watched 3 dafties + mucho shopping miss their stop at Kirkcaldy because they didn't get up in time. Strange, because I had a phone charging in the socket, a rucksack, a case and a jacket with me. Yet, I managed to get it all down, stowed away etc. before we stopped...

That happened on one of my morning commutes, fortunately the large crowd of commuters on the platform staring at the guard with "c'mon open the bloody doors" looks on their faces alerted him to the issue. But I can see that if nobody was getting on he might be oblivious.

Passengers not paying attention to PA announcements or their general surroundings.

This happened a couple of weeks ago, a guy woke up as we left sheffield, started to go nuts as he thought he had missed his stop , he was was running up and down, he then stopped and said "oh its not Meadowhall".

Then he sat down and went back to sleep .

I have no idea if he got off, but it was funny

Not quite as bad as being caught brushing my teeth on the sleeper once (when I thought we were twenty minutes late and turned up at Aviemore on time). Grabbed my kit, jumped off, went back to get my toothbrush and nearly ended up in Inverness with my kit lying in the snow. That was a near thing!

When the cab is not in use then the door is locked from the outside. When the driver is in the cab then I believe they are suppossed to keep them unlocked.

Not sure I should say this, but on one occasion someone left the saloon/cab rear door of a 317 unlocked. The cab was inaccessible, but I used the bit just outside it as an impromptu observation car. If anyone had caught me, I would have said I was there "to make sure nobody tried to get into the rear cab". The side door opened fine at Baldock, where I got off.
