The Bidston/Wrexham line suffered a bridge strike yesterday,I am only putting this up for interest, lots of pictures in the link to the local Daily Post who ran the story http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/passengers-abandon-train-penyffordd-after-7722126

Passengers had to abandon a train after a lorry hit a railway bridge this afternoon.

Services between Wrexham and Bidston were stopped just after 12.30pm after the vehicle hit the bridge at Penyffordd in Flintshire.

Passengers were led from a Bidston-bound train and escorted along the tracks to a nearby station.

Arran Wood, who was on the train when it was stopped

He said: “We stopped about 20 yards before the bridge, and were there for about 20 minutes before we were told that a van had hit the bridge.

“They took us off the train and about 30 of us walked along the tracks to the station at Penyffordd.

“They told us that a bus replacement service would come, but we waited another 40 minutes and then the train carried on its way.”

He said: “They must have made the announcement very quietly, but everyone else got back on the train and the train moved off.”

Luckily, Mr Wood avoided a long wait for the next train and was helped by Daily Post photographer Stacey Oliver, who stepped in to give him a lift to his destination.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said the bridge was closed for 50 minutes following the collision on Penyffordd Road.

Engineers from Network Rail were sent to the scene, but found the bridge had not suffered significant damage.

Network Rail apologised to affected passengers while assessing the bridge.

After the line was reopened, train operators warned of “residual delays” of 15 minutes to services, but the delays were soon cleared.

Similar disruption to trains was caused when lorries hit the bridge in February 2010 and again in December 2013.

I feel your title is misleading as it was obviously a controlled evacuation and the passengers did not actually abandon the train without authority but then again newspaper headlines are there to sell papers I suppose.

Or has the new jargon goes "Controlled Detrain"? for a moment I thought you were in the picture.

"Controlled detrain"?! It's still a controlled evacuation in my Rule Book - it's the tendency for passengers to self-evacuate on the platform that I'm not so sure about...
