It was easier to hook up a slammer to a diesel loco to run a skeleton service in the snow. Now with electric doors and the dreaded computer running everything, this is more difficult.

Is there any technical reason why that can't be done nowadays. I remember the days when a pair of 4VEPs would have a 33 or 73 on the front/rear in snowy weather. Seemed to work OK.

Then perhaps the industry needs to develop a system that provides equivalent functionality or reorganise its processes such that it recognises that passenger egress from crowded metro trains is far more likely to occur and move to pre-empt this. I mentioned up thread that even after 60 minutes at a stop 2M50 had still not been declared a "stranded train" so presumably nobody was even considering its evacuation.

I wouldn't disagree. Perhaps the system is there, but just needs a bit more training so that its used. Anyway, this is all speculation from me.

I would have thought that mechanically operated doors would freeze up, but there may be other technical reasons.

I suspect the system which will be developed is not to run any trains at all if the weather makes this sort of thing likely to happen

Probably not saying much that hasn't been said before, but not having access to a toilet for 3 hours is completely unacceptable.

If it were me, after about an hour in a crowded train with no access to facilities etc, I'd be off!
