In all fairness Clive both examples i used were quoted from other posters ; Ungreat and Toffeeman. The point is several posters on here have openly shown that from time to time they treat customers with contempt. Given that i spend thousands on railway travel each year this attitude is not appreciated! I can understand mess room banter but SOME of the things that have been posted on here amounts to more than that.

As i've recently broken my leg i'm not having to endure my daily commute at the moment. It won't be long until i'm back though!

I have looked for posts by these members and I fail to see anything the concludes they have treated passengers with contempt?

For example (if this is the post you are referring to?)

A common one at Kings Cross is "Where is platform 7" when they stood on platform 8.....go one, have a guess..would "Next to this one" be a clue?

This, whilst not clear, does not necessarily mean he actually said those things to the customer. Just that was his thoughts which are reproduced here. If he did thats not very good, but only he can tell us.

Otherwise that's not treating the customer with contempt.

Clive, as you say we shall never know whether he actually said those things or not. However, facial expressions often show what a person is thinking and are very difficult to control. A condescending attitude towards customers is not good, not matter how long you've been on shift.

Platform 8 at King's Cross can confuse people depending on how you enter the station, the associated works going on - and the simple fact that some people might expect the numbering to start from 1, on the left, and so 7 could be where 9-11 currently is (and that's a bit tricky to find during the works).

Sure, if you know the station layout it's bloody obvious. You can't fit 7 more platforms in the suburban shed, but I do presume a lot of people may never have been to the station before.

We also have platform 0 to contend with, which is quite well hidden. A little common sense would get you near to it by assuming it's near platform 1, but until they renumber them all, I am sure people need to ask there too.

If someone said 'next to this one, duh' or similar, I'd be very disappointed. Some simple directions would be nice, even if it is obvious, possibly even the offer to go with someone who might be genuinely confused or stressed (depending on who the staff member is, what they're doing etc).

Errr, Smethwick!
Sorry but I have to pull you up there....simple logic would dictate that either side of platform 6 would be 5 and 7.

I can think of at least one example where platforms aren't numbered logically - 5 and 6 at Wolverhampton are bays alongside platform 1 on the opposite side of the station from 4. And if you take the wrong set of stairs you can't reach platform 4. So plenty of scope for confusion there if you're not familiar with the station.

So, no, simple logic does not work 100 per cent of times. Once again, it may be a little unfair to pillory irregular or unfamiliar passengers for wanting to make absolutely sure they don't end up hurtling off in the wrong direction on the wrong train.

As for information displays, I was on the 1823 from Llandudno Junction to Shrewsbury on Saturday which was about five or six mins late at Chester and, at least two or three minutes before it left, the screens on the platform had already changed to show the 'first' train as being Manchester Piccadilly. I heard at least two intending passengers ask fellow passengers near the doors if the train was, indeed, going to Manchester. 'Stupid' passengers? I think not.

Yes but which is it, 5 or 7? Your employer pay's you to help passengers navigate their way round the station to ensure that they board the right train, amongst other things. Why should they be arsed? At the end of the day its your job to help them. In addition, usually doesn't guarantee that there will be one.

No...my employers pay me to drive trains. I help passengers as an additional duty.I could quite easily sit in the mess until 10 minutes before departure and walk to my cab.Passengers should at least try to check what platform they are on.Most seem to manage fine,by simply looking!

I will take you to task on that...where have I said I treat passengers with contempt? Be very careful with your reply as I WILL be watching for ANY implication of me not doing my job or insulting passengers.

No, I skimmed the thread looking for what Richmond was talking about. I was not prepared to say for sure (because I was not there) but it seemed to me that it was NOT what you had said to the customer and that Richmond was overreacting. I was pretty much defending you on that.

I was hanging out the window of my train dispatching it today, when I was asked a corker:
Passenger "Where is the toilet?"
Me "Out beside the entrance"
Passenger "Will I have time to go before my next train?"
Me "I don't know, how long do you usually take?"
At which point we started moving. Pity, I was wondering what her answer was going to be.

Fair point, I almost missed my train from platform 4 at Wolves (I believe it was because platform 4 was newly built/extended or a new footbridge installed to ease congestion) due to that footbridge (and good old fashioned beer after a birthday party). I did make it though (yet it further vindicated my point to always aim for the penultimate train of the night)

I do think that passengers at night deserve more leeway than those during the day, especially if it's the last train.
