Why have open and close buttons at all?

It's useful at terminus's for keeping the heat in. For instance at Hull I will often board the 185s or 170s (which have no vestibules) a good ten minutes or so before departure, so rather than let the heat bleed out until they out close I close them myself keeping all the nice heat inside! Definitely think it's a good idea to have them to be honest.

and god help the people sitting in the seats nearest to them when the door automaticly opens onto a cold, dark platform in a snowstorm and a force 7 wind! Think 314s in glasgow used to be like this, may stil be. Any others? I do take your point though.

When the Guard releases the doors, they automatically open, and when the Guard closes the doors, they automatically close!

Saves the passengers having to do anything then!!

Then there's the Networker gangway doors where you have to wave at the sensor to open them.

That is the perk of the Networkers. Only the people who dont travel on them much press the open button for the first set and stand right up against the second set of doors waiting for them to open. It looks as though they designed the gangway just for really tall people! There is a variation of the networker which has an open button for each set of doors on the doors themselves. A much simpler design.

The sensors have a tiny screw adjustment and sometimes won't even work if you wave very close - meaning you must resort to forcing the doors apart. It's funny that this is what you're supposed to do in an emergency, but on the 365s that have stickers to show this - they've forgotten that the doors don't have any indentation from one side!

And, if the sensor fails in first class on the trains that don't have buttons, you're trapped. Sometimes the doors are locked open, but not always. It's a case of banging on the door and hoping someone will come and let you out.

Sadly, my wish that it only happens when a bunch of chavs have taken over first class on the last train home is yet to come true - resulting in them ending up in Peterborough!

Maybe a timeout closure then!

Say Passengers open the doors, and they close after 30seconds automatically, unless opened again by the passengers, or closed by the Guard!

Only need an open button then!!

You see a delay in a lot of areas that have unstaffed stations that are quite close together. Guard is normally either finishing off a ticket or on way back to the local door, so that is mainly why sometimes you can be standing for a while until the doors are released. Brings up the interesting point - what is better, a one minute delay and a few more £s from another ticket, or a train on time and a few less £s?

My ToC makes a point of instructing Guards not to delay trains for tickets, as the cost of delay minutes far outweigh even the juiciest of fares! Having said that, sometimes it does happen just through distraction.

Exactly, but it still happens a lot of the time I travel with Northern. In most cases it is someone paying by card - that seems to take at least twice the amount of time compared to a cash transaction.

Come up to Glasgow on a cold winters day and have a ride on the 314s round the Cathcart Circle. These don't have passenger door controls, and every time the train stops at a station all the doors open, regardless of whether anyone wants on or off. Given the variability of the climate in this part of the world, it can be absolutely freezing at times!

Moan as we do about passengers and door controls, I'd rather see that than have to endure an all stops service in -15C on a 314.

Well SWT are using this on their Class 450 and 444's already, after about 30 seconds of opening, the doors automatically close. I still think it's best to keep two buttons though! :D

i believe its swt's 458s pis that actually says the door controlls are now released? a future mod maybe on other stock/tocs? just as an extra measure you understand as modern stock and some refurbished stock have door chimes/lights. Sadly though, joh public often leav what common sense they owned behind somewhere, or thats what happens in my experience anyway

did I not read, think it may have been wiki that 314s were to have controlls fitted at refurbishment?

It does get annoying though; you don't need the voice and the chimes (which are probably louder on 458s than on any other stock!)...

i have nothing against older people but its them often who are guilty, both on boarding and alighting and also using the loo!

I'm very glad to hear it, as I do hope you will become an old person yourself one day. :)
