Passenger Journeys Data

Hi all,

Hope people don't mind me asking - does anybody know of a website/source where I can obtain data about the number of passenger journeys made between two particular stations (perhaps from sales data for certain tickets?)

For some background, for my university coursework I'm looking at infrastructure enhancements between Birmingham and Nottingham, and would like to obtain data for how many passengers use the existing services between Birmingham & Derby, Derby & Nottingham, and Birmingham & Nottingham to establish whether the removal of a Derby call from this service (e.g. operating via Castle Donnington freight line) would substantially and negatively impact revenue.

Is this data openly available anywhere? I've spent a while searching and couldn't seem to find anything, but there's so much data available for the industry that I thought something might be around somewhere which I've missed!

The only stuff available to the public is the annual station usage data. Anything that covers journeys between particular stations is likely to be deemed commercially sensitive. You could try asking TOCs for it, but I suspect they won't part with it, or if they do, there may be very strict rules on what you're allowed to do with it.

I used some commercially-sensitive data in my uni dissertation, and had to sign an agreement that it wouldn't be made available to researchers for a period of time afterwards.

The data you seek would be commercially sensitive; and I’d suggest it would be unlikely XC would part with it.

There’s nothing stopping you going out and doing your own passenger counts though.

How would you do that without interviewing people? I can't see how counting people on and off trains will do it as you don't know the other half of the data (where they got on or off and including whether they were changing or joined or left at that point).

"Journeys per Season Ticket Study" (https://assets.publishing.service.g...e/790966/journeys-per-season-ticket-study.pdf) shows how "insiders" have measured this, and is very interesting because it concludes

We have finally estimated a weighted-average JpT figure for each of the three Season ticket validity periods, resulting in the following values:
• A Weekly Journeys per Ticket figure of 8.5; 83% of the current 10.3 LENNON figure;
• A Monthly Journeys per Ticket figure of 37; 82% of the current 45 LENNON figure; and
• An Annual Journeys per Ticket figure of 378, 79% of the current 480 LENNON figure.

I don't find it surprising that the existing estimates for "journeys per season ticket" are significantly on the high side.

I know it's not an answer to the original question, but it's probably relevant to anyone looking into passenger numbers today.

The specific intention as put in the OP would be to see if it would have a significant impact if the Derby stop were removed from Birmingham <> Nottingham services. Where they are starting or originating doesn’t effect that. Just needs a number on the number of people, as a proportion of total passengers before/after, using those trains.
