Passenger information screen gives train class

I didn't realise this was a thing. Are we all enthusiasts now?

Seen at Blackheath: a passenger information screen showing that the next train will be a Class 376.

I suppose that might be useful on lines with mixed stock as some people don’t like travelling on certain types

Doesn't seem that simple compared to writing 'no toilet'.

Maybe it could help commuters stand in the exact spot where their favourite door will be.

But how would the average Joe know this by adding a train class number, which I like to be honest but not for this reason. Why not simply say no toilets in that case?

No idea, I’m just passing on the idea suggested last week...

Newcastle does something similar to this with LNER Azumas and (formerly now I guess) HSTs, and TPE Nova trains, so on a board the display may read (purely as an example):

12:34 London Kings X
LNER Azuma

or

12:37 Liverpool Lime St.
Nova 1

or

12:42 Edinburgh
HST

etc.

This is done as Southeastern customers can therefore understand there's no toilets; not that they're out of service but none actually exist on 376s

It presumably also helps people who want the accessible or bicycle doors, if position of these varies (and they know which is where).

If done in conjunction with platform markings (platform vinyls/paint, zones signs etc) then it makes sense.

I think over the years, TOCs launching fancy new trains have talked a lot about their new classes of train, and of course given some of them names (GTR wanted to give 700s a name and even ran a competition, but I guess they never came up with anything good enough!) so the general public are becoming more aware of trains by numbers/names.

I think the next positive move would be to use the screens to show the headcode, along with route planners doing the same, so there can be no doubt over whether the train is the one you want (especially useful if there are trains leaving a terminus at the same time). People are used to flight numbers, so you don't need to be a trainspotter to benefit.

Really? Wouldn't just about everyone just get on the train that will get them at the right time to where they are going?

Yes "just about everyone" would but I suspect we are talking about enthusiasts here.
