I'm still waiting for Pevensey Bay. Only ever seen one passenger board, and have never sold or seen a ticket for there. When the one punter boarded ran up hoping to break my duck, alas he had a Eastbourne - Bexhill season.

I've boarded there once, on a trip back from the castle (on the way there used Pevensey & Westham) and it seemed to be quite well used considering the amount of services that called.

Heh. My last Daysave had a nominal origin of Doleham. Never been or even passed through. Ticket was printed at I believe Streatham Hill and was used between Milton Keynes and Worthing!

I saw someone board at Dilton Marsh on Saturday morning, I've seen passenger alighting, but have never seen someone board before.

Local door only due to the tiny platforms, where you could probably fit the entire train in the gap between the northbound & southbound platforms

What does "break my duck" mean?

Incidentally, when I'm in Cornwall in April, one of my excursions was planned to be the Liskeard to Looe branch line, and I had considered boarding at Coombe Junction Halt on one of the handful of trains that stop there, just for the added oddity.

I had read a report on a blog belonging to someone who wants to visit every railway station; and he mentioned that when he got on there, the guard was similarly eager to be able to issue a ticket from that station, but alas, the blogger had a ticket already.

I will probably have a Ride Cornwall that day, but after reading not just the blogger's account but your post, I think I shall purchase a ticket from Coombe Junction Halt to St Keyne Wishing Well Halt, for the guard's benefit I doubt I'll get off at SKN, though, as the blogger did - I don't particularly fancy the walk to the next stop and the wait, since I'll probably have a bit more track to bag that day! But we'll see.

There is also the term hairy duck, to be out for nothing on the first ball bowled.

So to 'break a duck' means to get more than none.

I know this will mean nothing to those in Germany, but I went to a 'state' school in the countryside that had a decent cricket team and a farm attached. I used to go to a few games as I 'knew' a few players and learned the terms.

Yesterday (February 20th) I was on the train scheduled to call at Pevensey Bay at 1751 (1652 Brighton to Ore) and can report that three passengers alighted (a couple and a lone man). For the record the number alighting at Normans Bay was also three. Neither halt provided any boarders.

One potentially plausible reason for ticket sales may involve starting short.

Doleham to London Terminals via Haywards Heath has a super off peak.

Haywards Heath to London Terminals doesn't have a super off peak - £36.10 for an any permitted off peak day return being the cheapest option

Doleham to London Terminals via Haywards Heath Super any permitted off peak is £34.60. Only £1.50 saving on a journey but over time may be a considerable saving for people travelling super off peak time over a month or more.

This was an obvious one just looking at the routing and restrictions for a Doleham to London Terminals ticket. I haven't looked when a super off peak is valid so may reduce the appeal of this start/finish short option, but I would imagine weekend validity being a good starter.
I expect there is a number of other examples but I don't know the routing.
