Partial Solar Eclipse in UK and Europe 2015.

Hi.
My Solar Eclipse picture is odd.
The Sun looks normal, but in a red spot of sky a mini Sun shows the eclipse. It didn't go very dark at all here.

Anyone else have pictures?

It was dull, cloudly and misty in Suffolk...

It went a tad dark, but not much more.

The only interesting thing was watching all the solar farms output slowly going down then back up!

From Manchester , was a bit cloudy through some of it .first photo was taken about 09:40 just after the peak because of the cloud . Didnt get any of the start of it because I slept in .

Perfect weather in Dundee. The Aberdeen-Penzance train which crossed the Tay at peak seemed to have dimmed the indoor lighting.

It's glorious sunshine now.

Sadly it was 100% cloud cover at 9.30 and all we saw was the sky get a little bit darker.

Lovely weather in Lincoln this morning for me and my partner to see. Had a look up at it but quickly retreated because it hurt my eyes :P Was very odd to see it get darker outside on the run up to 9:30 am

I am surprised that you chose to disregard the warnings NOT to look directly at the sun, even for the briefest of time. Of course it would hurt your eyes.

Because our part of Cheshire East is in the area where the hills begin, there was the usual cloud cover which meant no sighting would have been possible for those wishing to view the eclipse.

100% cloud cover here for the whole two hours of the eclipse from start to finish.

An hour later, of course, the Sun comes through and we've had a cloudless sky all afternoon. :roll:

That's a lens flare ( a reflection within or on the lens unit ).

The Sun itself is grossly over-exposed hence it not looking any different from normal; the flare being much fainter has in fact exposed correctly hence the eclipse is visible in it.

In look at the Sun I turned me phone onto camera mode and used it as goggles and it worked fine. Anyone else use that idea? Or maybe you used the special glasses or a pin hole on sheets of paper??

It's a shame this is the last one until 2026.

I think you may want to get a better camera

I know the photo turned out odd on my phone but my Mum's camera never saw anything but the sun, not even the crescent that mine caught just below it.

I'm afraid that's not a very safe thing to do; the brightness would still have been somewhat excessive for the eye.

It's a shame this is the last one until 2026.

There are others before then, just not from the UK. From memory I think the next three total eclipses ( and their associated partial phases ) are all from the Pacific area of the planet.

On hols in Reykjavik this week. Saw the eclipse at 09:39 this morning, - perfect conditions but didn't have any glasses, filter or even an old CD to view directly. All three cameras not up to it so just have to remember it. Had I brought the right kit it would have been cloudy all morning.
What was much better on Tuesday was the biggest aurora display for years. It went on for over 2 hours.

In terms of the near future for toal (not partial) we'll get a very small encroachment on 21st August 2017, then parts of the UK will also get a little nibble on 8th April 2024. 12th August 2026 will see our next major one, with in excess of 90% covered over pretty much the whole of the UK.

We just have to wait until 2090 for our next Total Eclipse.

What was most noticeable in Penzance was the sudden drop in temperature about 09.20, measured at 3 degrees celsius. Unlike the total eclipse here in 1999 the birds didn't fall silent, rather they became quite agitated about 0915, sensing something was not normal and this lasted until the eclipse started to lessen. To be honest, though, if you hadn't known about the eclipse in advance you might not have known anything was going on, because it never got noticeably darker. Perhaps one is spoiled by a total eclipse, because the atmosphere of 11/8/1999 at 11.11 will live with me forever, whereas today's will be soon forgotten about.

Beautiful clear blue sky in Notts, beautiful weather for a Friday morning. Surprising for an eclipse I remember 1999 and how dark it got so I was surprised how even with 90% coverage it still seemed quite bright this morning.

In 1999 I was directly under the centre line of totality in Normandy. It was the most magical moment. Everyone should experience it once in their lives.

Whilst 2026 is a significant partial eclipse in the UK, it is total across most of northern Spain, so well within reach of a short trip. But that's 11 years away.

The total eclipse in August 2017 crosses the whole of the US from Oregon to the Carolinas...

One of the other events which neccesarily correspond with an eclipse (due to the alignment of sun and moon) is that we've been experiencing some exceptionally big tides for the last few months, and will continue to do so for the rest of the year.
That much is predictable, solely on consideration of the timings of the new moons being in synch with the equinoxes and solstices.

But what I can't work out, is why the very big tide this week was this afternoon (Sat 21st) and not yesterday afternoon (Fri 20th). Can anyone explain this discrepancy of 2 tides for me, please?

Just been looking at the Mail website and they've got some good photos of the exceptionally high tide at Mont St Michel today. a once in 17 years phenomenon, also St Malo, one of my favourite places.
