Part Time Platform Assistant - First TPE

Hi All,

I've been offered an interview for the above job at Warrington Central, 10 hours a week, split over 3 days, 2117 - 0037.

The information for the role doesn't give any idea of the pay for this job so does anyone have any idea what sort of rate is given for this work?

Given there aren't LOADS of trains at this time of night too would I be correct in thinking a lot of work will be tidying up etc to get the station ready for the next day?

I went for a night shift position where clenaing is indeed a big part of it

Thanks for that, I had a feeling that is what it had to be really. Getting to Warrington would take 30 mins from here so a long way for just a 3.5 hour shift.

I might go for a totally different career (perhaps truer to my username!) and train for a PCV licence and go bus driving!

Good idea if you have a spare £2000 lying about!

I suspect part of the role is to be "visible" to reassure passengers, as the ticket office is closed by then. By that time of night we're down to 1-2 trains an hour in each direction and things are pretty quiet - though you do get a few rowdy types catching the last trains each way.

It might be a good career or it could be one of the worst mistakes you can make. Did my pcv test about 4 years ago when i was 19, 1st company i was with was terrible, however the 3rd operator i am with is brilliant, one of the routes is actually very quiet in the countryside.

I don't work in either railways or buses at the moment, so I'm just trying to get into one or the other!

I've got lots of customer service experience from my current work and I know of many of my friends who are bus drivers and from them they have had no major issues and the pay is reasonably good. I've had quote for a PCV licence for around £1100 which seems reasonable and if work is found quickly (I've spoken to a few independent bus companies who suggest they could help me with work) it could be earned back quite quickly!

If not, I'll still keep looking for maybe a full time railway job of some type!

Yes I have been know to make the odd post on another website! lol

I'll still keep looking for jobs on Northern Rail's website for day work, but maybe I'll have a go of bus driving for a bit! Maybe getting into the trains will be easier when the recession has eased, that way I can do both of my 'dream jobs' in my lifetime!

some bus companies have what they call a training bond. What this means is that they will fund your licence lessons training and you actual test then your additional on the job training. You sign a contract stating that you will stay for x years for them to get there money back. This happens at go north east and Stagecoach up this way but cant comment on anywhere else.

I reckon about £8 per hour before tax. Might be a slight premium for the fact it is unsociable hours, but I doubt it.
