Parkway stations

From other threads there seems to be quite a few people who don't like the name 'parkway,' so which are the best alternatives?

Possible alternatives instead of Liverpool South Parkway:
* Garston for Liverpool Airport
* Liverpool South Junction
* Liverpool International

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with "parkway" as long as the station has the appropriate facilities and location!

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with "parkway" as long as the station has the appropriate facilities and location!

Agree completely. When a station has a "parkway" suffix then it implies certain things that are appealing to a large section of the travelling public. Park and ride is becoming increasingly popular as while more people have cars than ever before, big cities are more congested than ever before. The parkway suffix sums up in one word that the station caters to the park and ride crowd. If that can get cars off the motorways and A roads and onto trains then it is good for business.

I think it's just used far too promiscuously. A parkway should be somewhere near to a motorway with large car parks, where people can park, and be on their, er, way. E.g. Bristol Parkway & Tiverton Parkway. And usually some way out from the place in the name. The equivalent of the old "Road". Didcot Parkway and Port Talbot Parkway and so on seems to add unnecessary complication.

Didcot Parkway and Port Talbot Parkway and so on seems to add unnecessary complication.

I think Didcot has grown into a Parkway. Look at a map and it has a direct road connection (A4130) to a major arterial route in the A34. It has a lot of parking, just not directly connected to the station.

South Liverpool as opposed to Liverpool South would have been more appropriate for a rename (the bus stops and main station building occupy what used to be Holly Park home to South Liverpool FC)

As for Luton Airport Parkway - people were expecting a proper airport station not somewhere almost as far from the airport as the town station. Chiltern Green North would be a better (if not so helpful) name.

Bodmin Parkway is another example of replacing "Road" with "Parkway". I'm not convinced Bodmin really qualifies given the lack of facilities available...

It is situated on one of the two main road routes out of Cornwall though, the A38 and is used as a railhead for large parts of Cornwall.

IMO Parkway should be for stations with lots of parking and a decent shuttle bus connection to a place that is more than 4 miles away from the place in the name.

It's interesting that people ask for "Middlebrook" when they mean "Horwich Parkway". I guess it /is/ a bit weird to give it the latter name when it's not exactly in deepest darkest Horwich.

On the wider issue, I have no problem with "Parkway" though I understand why people feel it's misused.

Luton Retail Park would be an even better name!

In my opinion, 'parkway' designations should be only be reserved to stations which are over 3 miles (5km) from the place they are serving, or where the town already has a central station on the same line but the parkway serves as a park and ride (ie Warwick Parkway - Warwick).

I think they were right to change. Liverpool South Parkway now provides connections between Merseyrail Northern line services and longer distance services as well as providing a interchange to bus services including those to the Airport. The only question is really could Hunts Cross have been turned in to Liverpool South Parkway? I imagine having less space to build a bus interchange and car parking there was the reason for not developing Hunts Cross.

Car parks with buses connecting to the town/city centre generally show the name of the car park e.g. London Road then follow it with the capital P with means car park then a plus sign and a picture of a bus. I've noticed signs for some stations on the Wirral are similar to this but with the bus symbol replaced by the National Rail logo and followed by the Merseytravel logo. There are no stations on the Wirral that have been renamed Parkway despite being signposted as having Park + Rail facilities.

I agree with an extent to the airport parkways (Liverpool, Luton) and the use of the word there - some of the parking areas at airports for various facilities are massive, so it sort of is a parkway. As for Horwich, Didcot and Port Talbot, it doesn't sit right with me (Lostock (Bolton) is also known to have a 'Parkway' suffix at times!).

There were proposals by local groups etc last year to have Ashcurch for Tewkesbury renamed 'Tewkesbury Parkway'. The station sits 1.4 miles from Tewkesbury and 0.3 miles from Ashchurch (and 0.8 miles to j9 of the M5).

I think the name 'Parkway' to most people means the station is a fair distance from the town opposed to it being a park and ride for people from outside the local area.
