Afternoon all,

Is there a good railway route for Paris to Bologna (and return) which can either be done in one long day, or using some sort of sleeper/overnight train, thus avoiding a long overnight wait at Basel?

You've got the 3 daily TGV Paris-Turin

06:29
PARIS GARE LYON
12:24
TORINO PORTA SUSA
05h55
TGV

10:41
PARIS GARE LYON
16:18
TORINO PORTA SUSA
05h37
TGV

14:41
PARIS GARE LYON
20:18
TORINO PORTA SUSA
05h37
TGV

From Torino (Porta Susa) - there fast services to Bologna ( usually at least hourly ) taking just over 2hours - or you could stay with the TGV as far as Milan and change there.

Or there is the Paris-Venice sleeper which would get you to Milan at 6am Verona at 8 or Padova at 9, in each case the onward journey is around an hour, so it depends whether speed or sleep is more important!
