Sadly, even if we did have a long enough stretch of bi-directionally signalled track, I can't see it happening.

Easy enough to do - just get somewhere with parallel fast/slow lines (such as part of Leeds-York and York-Northallerton)...as long as the both the ups/downs were together it would work

And it could be done south of Crewe. A couple of months back we had Earl of Mount Edgecumbe and Princess Elizabeth both heading south, EoMe was on the slow and PE on the fast unfortunately they were about 90 minutes apart, but with a will it is possible.

Ah, but that was rather a long time ago, totally different railway then Agree that it could be done on a four track mainline but there is probably no chance of Network Rail ever pathing something like that unless it is in the middle of the night and there were no engineering works.

It's been done over here quite recently - I remember the parallel running between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Moor Park for Steam on the Met a few years ago...

They do it on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway at the galas. There are some clips on UTube.

Takes me back to an exhilarating moment spotting by the Preston-Blackpool line at Lea Road on a summer Saturday in 1963(?). We could see two "steams" coming a fair way off...then "both Brits"...then 70000 herself and another Brit came by at a fair rate, obviously deliberately keeping pace with each other. Truly spectacular. This was the first time most of us had seen Britannia, which was an East Anglia loco at the time. For the life of me I cannot remember what the other Brit was...I wonder if anyone on here remembers!

I always remember 40145's trip to Salisbury in November 2006. Departing Didcot, we managed to catch up with a Freightliner 66 and it's load and we ran parallel with it until the driver of the Freightliner applied the brakes because of yellow signals.
It was rather fun with the F'liner driver tooting the horn and flailing (inside the cab ) as we passed with 40145 on full chat! Obviously a crank! lol
