I can't see a rule relating to marching bands and level crossings. Slow vehicles, yes. Herding animals, yes. But nothing in the Highway code or the signs at level crossings covers this particular situation.

Id argue common sense and depending how big said band is, slow moving ! AHB's minimum 28 seconds beofre tain thunders past, does everything need a written 'rule' these days ?
A simple call to the Signaller, solves everything. I have been on the receiving end of too many REC calls.

At the risk of being rather unsensitive towards the players - herding animals is about right!

People behave differently in groups.

It is probably timely to think now about how it will be managed next year, when there will be a regular train service.

...the OP is a member of one band who's taking part in a larger parade. His band's action for next year should be to ask the overall parade organiser for details of what planning has been done, what has been agreed with NR, and copies of the agreed procedures for each band to follow. It makes no sense for each individual band to come up with their own plan, and contact NR separately (unless of course they have concerns about what they hear back from the overall parade organiser when they ask them)

But it may also depend on the insurance arrangements. If each band has its own insurance, then each insurance company may require individual assurances and information for the policy to be valid. The parade organisers may be able to provide sufficient assurances from NR, but it is not a given.

Whether it does or not - I was responding to the comment that the organisers should follow the rules, when it seems there aren't any specific to the situation.

So the parade went off without a problem yesterday. I had an email conversation with Network Rail who assured me that there wouldn't be any trains due to engineering works elsewhere. It was a good thing that I had that assurance, as all of the crossing phones had bags on them saying "Out of Use", somewhat scuppering any plans to use the crossing phones!
